Rejection at Nazareth
He6:1–6 Mt 13:53–58 left there and came to his hometown,6:1 Mk 1:9 and his disciples6:1 Mt 9:10; Mk 10:10; Lk 6:1; Jn 6:3; Ac 6:1 followed him.
When the Sabbath6:2 Mk 2:23; Lk 13:10 came, he began to teach6:2 Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 in the synagogue,6:2 Jms 2:2 and many who heard him were astonished. “Where did this man get these things?” they said. “What is this wisdom6:2 Pr 3:19; Ac 7:22; 1Co 1:21 that has been given to him, and how are these miracles6:2 Ac 19:11 performed by his hands?
Jesus said to them, “A prophet6:4 Mt 2:23 is not without honor6:4 Mt 13:57; 1Co 4:10; 12:23 except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.”
Commissioning the Twelve
He6:7–13 Mt 10:5–42; Lk 9:1–6 summoned6:7 Lk 18:16 the Twelve6:7 Mk 11:11 and began to send6:7 Mk 3:14 them out in pairs and gave them authority over unclean6:7 2Co 6:17 spirits.6:7 Lk 11:24
He instructed them to take nothing for the road except a staff — no bread, no traveling bag,6:8 Lk 10:4 no money in their belts,
He said to them, “Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that place.
If any place does not welcome6:11 Ac 17:11 you or listen to you, when you leave there, shake the dust off your feet6:11 Mt 10:14; Lk 9:5; 10:11; Ac 13:51 as a testimony6:11 1Tm 2:6 against them.”6:11 Other mss add Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Sodom or Gomorrah on judgment day than for that town.
John the Baptist Beheaded
King6:14–16 Lk 9:7–9 Herod6:14 Mt 14:1 heard about it, because Jesus’s name6:14 Jn 10:25 had become well known. Some6:14 Other mss read He said, “John the Baptist6:14 Mk 1:4 has been raised from the dead,6:14 Mt 17:9; Jn 21:14 and that’s why miraculous powers6:14 Mk 5:30 are at work6:14 1Co 12:6 in him.”
For6:17–29 Mt 14:6–12 Herod himself had given orders to arrest John and to chain6:17 Mk 15:1 him in prison on account of Herodias,6:17 Mt 14:3,6; Lk 3:19 his brother Philip’s wife, because he had married her.6:17 1Tm 5:14
John had been telling Herod, “It is not lawful6:18 Mk 2:24; Jn 18:31 for you to have your brother’s wife.”6:18 Lv 18:16; 20:21
because Herod feared6:20 Ps 147:11; Pr 1:7; Rv 14:7 John and protected him, knowing he was a righteous6:20 Mt 13:17 and holy6:20 Ps 20:6; 1Co 7:14 man. When Herod heard him he would be very perplexed,6:20 Other mss read When he heard him, he did many things6:20 Lk 24:4; Jn 13:22; Ac 25:20; 2Co 4:8; Gl 4:20 and yet he liked to listen to him.6:20 2Co 11:19
An opportune time came on his birthday, when Herod gave a banquet6:21 Jn 13:2 for his nobles,6:21 Rv 6:15 military commanders,6:21 Ac 21:31 and the leading men of Galilee.6:21 Mt 17:22
She went out and said to her mother, “What should I ask for?”
“John the Baptist’s6:24 Mk 1:4 head,” she said.
At once she hurried to the king and said, “I want you to give me John the Baptist’s6:25 Lk 7:20 head on a platter6:25 Mt 14:8 immediately.”
Although the king was deeply distressed,6:26 Mt 26:38; Mk 14:34 because of his oaths6:26 Mt 5:33 and the guests6:26 Lit and those reclining at the table he did not want to refuse6:26 1Th 4:8 her.
The king immediately sent for an executioner and commanded him to bring John’s head. So he went and beheaded him in prison,
brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl. Then the girl gave it to her mother.
Feeding of the Five Thousand
The6:30–44 Mt 14:13–21; Lk 9:10–17; Jn 6:1–15 apostles6:30 Ac 1:2; Jd 17 gathered around Jesus and reported to him all that they had done and taught.
He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a remote place and rest for a while.” For many people were coming and going, and they did not even have time to eat.
So they went away in the boat by themselves to a remote place,
but many saw them leaving and recognized them, and they ran on foot from all the towns and arrived ahead of them.6:33 Other mss add and gathered around him
When it grew late, his disciples6:35 Mk 10:10 approached him and said, “This place is deserted,6:35 Jn 1:23; Rv 12:6 and it is already late.
Send them away so that they can go into the surrounding countryside and villages to buy themselves something to eat.”

“You give them something to eat,” he responded.
They said to him, “Should we go and buy two hundred denarii6:37 A denarius = one day’s wage worth of bread and give them something to eat?”
He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”
When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”
Then he instructed them to have all the people sit down in groups on the green grass.
So they sat down in groups of hundreds and fifties.
He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and broke the loaves. He kept giving them to his disciples to set before the people. He also divided the two fish among them all.
They picked up twelve baskets full of pieces of bread and fish.
Now those who had eaten the loaves were five thousand men.
Walking on the Water
Immediately6:45–56 Mt 14:22–36; Jn 6:16–21 he made his disciples get into the boat and go ahead of him to the other side, to Bethsaida,6:45 Jn 12:21 while he dismissed the crowd.
After he said good-bye to them, he went away to the mountain6:46 Mt 4:8 to pray.6:46 Mt 5:44; Ac 12:12
Well into the night, the boat was in the middle of the sea, and he was alone on the land.
He saw them straining6:48 Rv 20:10 at the oars,6:48 Or them being battered as they rowed because the wind was against them. Very early in the morning6:48 Lit Around the fourth watch of the night = 3 to 6 a.m. he came toward them walking on the sea and wanted to pass by them.
because they all saw him and were terrified.6:50 Jn 5:7 Immediately he spoke with them and said, “Have courage!6:50 Jn 16:33 It is I.6:50 Ex 3:14; Ps 45:8; Jn 8:24 Don’t be afraid.”6:50 Jn 6:20
Then he got into the boat with them, and the wind ceased. They were completely astounded,
