“I have told you these things to keep you from stumbling.
They will ban you from the synagogues.16:2 Jn 9:22; 12:42 In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering service16:2 Ex 12:25 to God.
But I have told you these things so that when their time16:4 Other mss read when the time comes you will remember16:4 Jn 14:29; Rv 2:5 I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
But now I am going away16:5 Jn 7:33; 8:14,21–22; 13:3,33,36; 14:4–5,28; 16:10,17 to him who sent me, and not one of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 16:5 Jn 8:14
Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth.16:7 Ps 119:142 It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send him to you.16:7 Jn 14:26
When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:
About sin, because they do not believe in me;
When the Spirit of truth16:13 Rm 3:7; 1Jn 4:6 comes, he will guide you into all the truth.16:13 Jn 1:17; 14:6; 2Th 2:10 For he will not speak on his own, but he will speak whatever he hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.
He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.
Sorrow Turned to Joy
Then some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this he’s telling us: ‘In a little while, you will not see me; again in a little while, you will see me,’ and, ‘Because I am going to the Father’16:17 Jn 14:12; 16:10?”
They said, “What is this he is saying,16:18 Other mss omit he is saying ‘In a little while’? We don’t know what he’s talking about.”
Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, and so he said to them, “Are you asking one another about what I said, ‘In a little while, you will not see me; again in a little while, you will see me’?
Truly I tell you, you will weep and mourn,16:20 Mt 11:17; Lk 7:32; 23:27 but the world will rejoice. You will become sorrowful,16:20 Jn 16:6; 2Co 2:2 but your sorrow will turn to joy.
Jesus the Victor

“I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. A time is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures, but I will tell you plainly about the Father.
On that day you will ask16:26 Jn 14:16 in my name, and16:26 Jn 10:25 I am not telling you that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
His disciples said, “Look, now you’re speaking plainly and not using any figurative language.
Jesus responded to them, “Do you now believe?
Indeed, an hour is coming, and has come,16:32 Jn 4:23 when each of you will be scattered to his own home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.16:32 Jn 8:16,29
I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”
