9The ax is already at the root of the trees. Therefore, every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”3:9 Mt 3:10; 7:19; Lk 13:6–9

10“What then should we do?” 3:10 Ac 2:37–38 the crowds were asking him.

11He replied to them, “The one who has two shirts must share with someone who has none, and the one who has food must do the same.”3:11 Is 58:7

13He told them, “Don’t collect any more than what you have been authorized.”

14Some soldiers also questioned him, “What should we do?”

He said to them, “Don’t take money from anyone by force or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.”

15Now the people were waiting expectantly, and all of them were questioning in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah.3:15 Jn 1:19–20

18Then, along with many other exhortations, he proclaimed good news to the people.

19But when John rebuked Herod the tetrarch3:19 Mt 14:3; Mk 6:17 because of Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the evil things he had done,3:19 Mt 14:1; Lk 3:1

20Herod added this to everything else — he locked up John in prison.3:20 Jn 3:24

The Baptism of Jesus

21When all the people were baptized,3:21–22 Mt 3:13–17; Mk 1:9–11 Jesus also was baptized. As he was praying,3:21 Mt 14:23; Lk 5:16; 9:18,28–29 heaven opened,3:21 Jn 1:51; Ac 7:55; 10:11; Rv 19:11

22and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.”3:22 Ps 2:7; Is 42:1; Mt 3:17; 17:5; Mk 1:11; Lk 9:35; 2Pt 1:17
