Resurrection Morning
On24:1–12 Mt 28:1–10; Mk 16:1–11; Jn 20:1–18 the first day of the week,24:1 Ac 20:7; 1Co 16:2 very early in the morning, they24:1 Other mss add and other women with them came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared.
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling24:4 Lk 2:9; 17:24; Ac 12:7 clothes.
So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.
“Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men.
“He is not here, but he has risen!24:6 Mt 26:32; Mk 5:41; 9:27; Jn 2:19; 1Co 15:4 Remember how he spoke to you when he was still in Galilee,24:6 Mt 17:22–23; Mk 9:30–31; Lk 9:22,44
saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed24:7 Lk 9:22,31,44; 18:32–33; 23:21 into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise24:7 Mt 17:9,23; Mk 8:31; 9:31; 10:34; Lk 18:33; 24:46 on the third day’?”
And they remembered his words.
Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven24:9 Ac 1:15–26; 2:14 and to all the rest.
Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James,24:10 Mk 15:40; 16:1; Lk 8:2–3 and the other women with them were telling the apostles24:10 Lk 6:13 these things.
The Emmaus Disciples
Now24:13 Mk 16:12–13 that same day two of them were on their way to a village called Emmaus, which was about seven miles24:13 Lit about sixty stadia; one stadion = 600 feet24:13 Rv 21:16 from Jerusalem.24:13 Mt 23:37; Ac 8:1
Together they were discussing everything that had taken place.
And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus himself came near and began to walk along with them.
But they24:16 Lit their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.24:16 Lk 9:45; 18:34; Jn 20:14–15; 21:4
Then he asked them, “What is this dispute that you’re having24:17 Lit “What are these words that you are exchanging with each other as you are walking?” And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.

“What things?” he asked them.
So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth,24:19 Lk 4:34; 18:37; Ac 2:22 who was a prophet24:19 Dt 18:15; Lk 4:24 powerful in action and speech24:19 Lk 4:14; Ac 1:1; 2:22 before God and all the people,24:19 Lk 18:43
and how our chief priests and leaders24:20 Lk 23:13 handed him over to be sentenced to death,24:20 Lk 9:44; 18:32; Ac 3:13; 13:27–28 and they crucified him.24:20 Lk 23:21,25; Ac 5:30
But we were hoping that he was the one who was about to redeem24:21 Lk 22:20; Ac 1:6 Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day24:21 Lk 9:22; 13:32; 18:33 since these things happened.
Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb,
and when they didn’t find his body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said he was alive.
Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”24:24 Lk 24:12; Jn 20:2–10
He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow24:25 Lit slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken!24:25 Lk 16:31; 18:31; Ac 26:27; 2Pt 1:21
Wasn’t it necessary for the Messiah to suffer24:26 Lk 24:44–48; 1Co 15:3–5 these things and enter into his glory?” 24:26 Lk 9:26,32; 21:27; 22:69; Ac 2:33; 7:55; 22:11
They came near the village where they were going, and he gave the impression that he was going farther.24:28 Mk 6:48
But they urged him, “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.
It was as he reclined at the table with them that he took the bread, blessed and broke24:30 Lk 9:16; 22:19 it, and gave it to them.
Then their eyes were opened,24:31 2Kg 6:17; Lk 24:16 and they recognized him, but he disappeared from their sight.24:31 Jn 20:19,26
They said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts burning within us while he was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures24:32 Ac 17:3; 1Co 15:3–8 to us?”
That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven24:33 Lk 24:9 and those with them gathered together,
who said, “The Lord has truly been raised and has appeared to Simon!” 24:34 Lk 22:32; 1Co 15:4–5
The Reality of the Risen Jesus
As24:36–44 Jn 20:19–20 they were saying these things, he himself stood in their midst. He said to them, “Peace24:36 Lk 2:14; 7:50; 8:48; 10:5; 19:38; Ac 10:36 to you!”
But they were startled and terrified24:37 Lk 24:5; Ac 10:4; 24:25 and thought they were seeing a ghost.24:37 Mt 14:26
Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself!24:39 Jn 20:25,27 Touch me and see,24:39 Mt 28:9; Ac 2:31; 17:18,31–32; 23:6–10; 24:15,21 because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.”
Having said this, he showed them his hands and feet.
But while they still were amazed and in disbelief because of their joy, he asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?”
So they gave him a piece of a broiled fish,24:42 Other mss add and some honeycomb
and he took it and ate in their presence.
He told them, “These are my words24:44 Lk 9:22,44; 17:25; 18:31–33; 22:37 that I spoke to you while I was still with you — that everything written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets,24:44 Ac 13:15; 28:23 and the Psalms24:44 Ps 2:6–9; 16:10; 22:1–18; 34:20; 41:9; 69:1–9,20–21,26; 110:1–7; 118:22–26 must be fulfilled.”
He also said to them, “This is what is written:24:46 Other mss add and thus it was necessary that The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead the third day,24:46 Ps 16:10; Lk 9:22,44; 17:25; 18:32; Ac 8:26–40; 1Co 15:3–4
and repentance for24:47 Many mss read repentance and forgiveness of sins24:47 Hs 14:2; Lk 3:3; Ac 2:38; 5:31; 8:22 will be proclaimed in his name to all the nations,24:47 Gn 12:3; Ps 22:27; Is 2:2; 49:6; Hs 2:23; Mal 1:11; Mt 28:19–20; Mk 16:15 beginning at Jerusalem.24:47–49 Ac 1:4–8
