掃羅卻在摧毀教會，他挨家挨戶搜尋，把男女信徒抓進監裡。

「我是猶太人，生於基利迦的大數，在耶路撒冷長大，曾在迦瑪列門下嚴格地按著我們祖先的律法接受教育，像你們今日一樣熱心事奉上帝。我曾經把信奉這道的男女信徒抓進監獄，迫害他們，置他們於死地。大祭司和眾長老都可以為我作證。我還拿著他們寫給大馬士革的猶太人的信去拘捕那裡的信徒，押回耶路撒冷受刑。

在眾使徒中我最微不足道，根本不配稱為使徒，因為我曾迫害上帝的教會。

掃羅逃到耶路撒冷後，曾設法與當地的門徒聯絡，可是他們都怕他，不相信他是門徒。

聽的人都大吃一驚，說：「他不就是那在耶路撒冷迫害信徒的人嗎？他到這裡來不是要把大馬士革的信徒押去見祭司長嗎？」

「我從小在本族和耶路撒冷為人如何，猶太人都知道。他們認識我很久了，如果他們肯作證的話，他們可以證明我從小就屬於猶太教中最嚴格的法利賽派。

掃羅繼續用兇狠的話恐嚇主的門徒。他去見大祭司，要取得授權書到大馬士革的各會堂搜捕信耶穌的人，無論男女，都要把他們押回耶路撒冷。

我自己也曾經認為應該盡一切可能反對拿撒勒人耶穌。我在耶路撒冷就是這樣做的。我得到祭司長的授權，把許多聖徒關進監獄。他們被判死刑，我也表示贊同。我多次在各會堂懲罰他們，逼他們說褻瀆的話，我對他們深惡痛絕，甚至到國外的城鎮去追捕、迫害他們。

亞拿尼亞回答說：「主啊！我聽見許多人說他對耶路撒冷的信徒大加迫害。他來這裡是得到祭司長的授權，要拘捕所有求告你名的人。」

儘管我從前是個褻瀆上帝、迫害和侮辱信徒的人，但我仍然蒙了憐憫，因為那時我無知，還沒有信耶穌。

論熱心，我曾經迫害教會；論律法要求的義，我是無可指責的。

當時，掃羅也贊成殺死司提凡。從那天起，耶路撒冷的教會開始遭到極大的迫害。除了使徒之外，門徒都分散到猶太和撒瑪利亞各地。
