蓋司牧乃天主之家宰、是宜無懈可擊、毋剛愎自用、毋暴氣動怒。凡嗜酒毆人、貪婪財貨、皆非所宜。

Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless— not overbearing, not quick- tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain.

A church leader takes care of God’s family. That’s why he must be without blame. He must not look after only his own interests. He must not get angry easily. He must not get drunk. He must not push people around. He must not try to get money by cheating people.

For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain,

A church leader is a manager of God’s household, so he must live a blameless life. He must not be arrogant or quick tempered; he must not be a heavy drinker, violent, or dishonest with money.

As an overseer of God’s household, he must be blameless, not arrogant, not hot-tempered, not an excessive drinker, not a bully, not greedy for money,

For the overseer must be beyond reproach as God’s steward, not self willed, not quick tempered, not overindulging in wine, not a bully, not greedy for money,

For a bishop must be blameless, as a steward of God, not self-willed, not quick-tempered, not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,

The Lord replied,“ Who then is the faithful and wise manager, whom the master puts in charge of his household servants, to give them their allowance of food at the proper time?

Just as each one has received a gift, use it to serve one another as good stewards of the varied grace of God.

And do not get drunk with wine, which is debauchery, but be filled by the Spirit,

Even these men stagger because of wine, they stumble around because of beer– priests and prophets stagger because of beer, they are confused because of wine, they stumble around because of beer; they stagger while seeing prophetic visions, they totter while making legal decisions.

All their watchmen are blind, they are unaware. All of them are like mute dogs, unable to bark. They pant, lie down, and love to snooze.The dogs have big appetites; they are never full. They are shepherds who have no understanding; they all go their own way, each one looking for monetary gain.Each one says,‘ Come on, I’ll get some wine! Let’s guzzle some beer! Tomorrow will be just like today! We’ll have everything we want!’

Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters! Let every person be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger.For human anger does not accomplish God’s righteousness.

A person who has a quick temper does foolish things, and a person with crafty schemes is hated.

Do not let yourself be quickly provoked, for anger resides in the lap of fools.

One should think about us this way– as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.Now what is sought in stewards is that one be found faithful.

This saying is trustworthy:“ If someone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a good work.”The overseer then must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, self- controlled, respectable, hospitable, an able teacher,not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money.He must manage his own household well and keep his children in control without losing his dignity.But if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for the church of God?He must not be a recent convert or he may become arrogant and fall into the punishment that the devil will exact.And he must be well thought of by those outside the faith, so that he may not fall into disgrace and be caught by the devil’s trap.Deacons likewise must be dignified, not two- faced, not given to excessive drinking, not greedy for gain,holding to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience.And these also must be tested first and then let them serve as deacons if they are found blameless.Likewise also their wives must be dignified, not slanderous, temperate, faithful in every respect.Deacons must be husbands of one wife and good managers of their children and their own households.For those who have served well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

And the Lord’s slave must not engage in heated disputes but be kind toward all, an apt teacher, patient,correcting opponents with gentleness. Perhaps God will grant them repentance and then knowledge of the truth

O my soul, do not come into their council, do not be united to their assembly, my heart, for in their anger they have killed men, and for pleasure they have hamstrung oxen.

Older women likewise are to exhibit behavior fitting for those who are holy, not slandering, not slaves to excessive drinking, but teaching what is good.

A quick-tempered person stirs up dissension, but one who is slow to anger calms a quarrel.

The reason I left you in Crete was to set in order the remaining matters and to appoint elders in every town, as I directed you.

Better to be slow to anger than to be a mighty warrior, and one who controls his temper is better than one who captures a city.

It is not for kings, O Lemuel, it is not for kings to drink wine, or for rulers to crave strong drink,lest they drink and forget what is decreed, and remove from all the poor their legal rights.
