“ But they and our fathers behaved proudly, hardened their neck, didn’t listen to your commandments,

“ But they, our ancestors, became arrogant and stiff- necked, and they did not obey your commands.

“ But our people before us became proud and stubborn. They didn’t obey your commands.

“ But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments.

“ But our ancestors were proud and stubborn, and they paid no attention to your commands.

But our ancestors acted arrogantly; they became stiff-necked and did not listen to your commands.

“ But they, our fathers, acted arrogantly; They became stubborn and would not listen to Your commandments.

“ But they and our fathers acted proudly, Hardened their necks, And did not heed Your commandments.

“ But they– our ancestors– behaved presumptuously; they rebelled and did not obey your commandments.

For I know your rebellion and your stiff neck. Behold, while I am yet alive with you today, you have been rebellious against Yahweh. How much more after my death?

and showed signs and wonders against Pharaoh, and against all his servants, and against all the people of his land; for you knew that they dealt proudly against them, and made a name for yourself, as it is today.

and testified against them, that you might bring them again to your law. Yet they were arrogant, and didn’t listen to your commandments, but sinned against your ordinances( which if a man does, he shall live in them), turned their backs, stiffened their neck, and would not hear.

But my people didn’t listen to my voice. Israel desired none of me.So I let them go after the stubbornness of their hearts, that they might walk in their own counsels.Oh that my people would listen to me, that Israel would walk in my ways!I would soon subdue their enemies, and turn my hand against their adversaries.

“ You stiff- necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.

“ Yahweh of Armies, the God of Israel says,‘ Behold, I will bring on this city and on all its towns all the evil that I have pronounced against it, because they have made their neck stiff, that they may not hear my words.’”

and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that didn’t make their hearts loyal, whose spirit was not steadfast with God.The children of Ephraim, being armed and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.They didn’t keep God’s covenant, and refused to walk in his law.They forgot his doings, his wondrous deeds that he had shown them.He did marvelous things in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.He split the sea, and caused them to pass through. He made the waters stand as a heap.In the daytime he also led them with a cloud, and all night with a light of fire.He split rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink abundantly as out of the depths.He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers.Yet they still went on to sin against him, to rebel against the Most High in the desert.They tempted God in their heart by asking food according to their desire.Yes, they spoke against God. They said,“ Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?Behold, he struck the rock, so that waters gushed out, and streams overflowed. Can he give bread also? Will he provide meat for his people?”Therefore Yahweh heard, and was angry. A fire was kindled against Jacob, anger also went up against Israel,because they didn’t believe in God, and didn’t trust in his salvation.Yet he commanded the skies above, and opened the doors of heaven.He rained down manna on them to eat, and gave them food from the sky.Man ate the bread of angels. He sent them food to the full.He caused the east wind to blow in the sky. By his power he guided the south wind.He also rained meat on them as the dust, winged birds as the sand of the seas.He let them fall in the middle of their camp, around their habitations.So they ate, and were well filled. He gave them their own desire.They didn’t turn from their cravings. Their food was yet in their mouths,when the anger of God went up against them, killed some of their fattest, and struck down the young men of Israel.For all this they still sinned, and didn’t believe in his wondrous works.Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in terror.When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly.They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.But they flattered him with their mouth, and lied to him with their tongue.For their heart was not right with him, neither were they faithful in his covenant.But he, being merciful, forgave iniquity, and didn’t destroy them. Yes, many times he turned his anger away, and didn’t stir up all his wrath.He remembered that they were but flesh, a wind that passes away, and doesn’t come again.How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness, and grieved him in the desert!They turned again and tempted God, and provoked the Holy One of Israel.They didn’t remember his hand, nor the day when he redeemed them from the adversary;how he set his signs in Egypt, his wonders in the field of Zoan,he turned their rivers into blood, and their streams, so that they could not drink.He sent among them swarms of flies, which devoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them.He gave also their increase to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locust.He destroyed their vines with hail, their sycamore fig trees with frost.He gave over their livestock also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts.He threw on them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, indignation, and trouble, and a band of angels of evil.He made a path for his anger. He didn’t spare their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence,and struck all the firstborn in Egypt, the chief of their strength in the tents of Ham.But he led out his own people like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock.He led them safely, so that they weren’t afraid, but the sea overwhelmed their enemies.He brought them to the border of his sanctuary, to this mountain, which his right hand had taken.He also drove out the nations before them, allotted them for an inheritance by line, and made the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tents.Yet they tempted and rebelled against the Most High God, and didn’t keep his testimonies,but turned back, and dealt treacherously like their fathers. They were twisted like a deceitful bow.For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their engraved images.When God heard this, he was angry, and greatly abhorred Israel,so that he abandoned the tent of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men,and delivered his strength into captivity, his glory into the adversary’s hand.He also gave his people over to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance.Fire devoured their young men. Their virgins had no wedding song.Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows couldn’t weep.Then the Lord awakened as one out of sleep, like a mighty man who shouts by reason of wine.He struck his adversaries backward. He put them to a perpetual reproach.Moreover he rejected the tent of Joseph, and didn’t choose the tribe of Ephraim,But chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion which he loved.He built his sanctuary like the heights, like the earth which he has established forever.He also chose David his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds;from following the ewes that have their young, he brought him to be the shepherd of Jacob, his people, and Israel, his inheritance.So he was their shepherd according to the integrity of his heart, and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands.

But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked. You have grown fat. You have grown thick. You have become sleek. Then he abandoned God who made him, and rejected the Rock of his salvation.

Because I knew that you are obstinate, and your neck is an iron sinew, and your brow bronze;

Don’t harden your heart, as at Meribah, as in the day of Massah in the wilderness,when your fathers tempted me, tested me, and saw my work.Forty long years I was grieved with that generation, and said,“ It is a people that errs in their heart. They have not known my ways.”

while it is said,“ Today if you will hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts, as in the rebellion.”

We have sinned with our fathers. We have committed iniquity. We have done wickedly.

He also rebelled against king Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear by God; but he stiffened his neck, and hardened his heart against turning to Yahweh, the God of Israel.

Generation, consider Yahweh’s word. Have I been a wilderness to Israel? Or a land of thick darkness? Why do my people say,‘ We have broken loose. We will come to you no more?’

Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Don’t look at the stubbornness of this people, nor at their wickedness, nor at their sin,

Notwithstanding, they would not listen, but hardened their neck, like the neck of their fathers, who didn’t believe in Yahweh their God.

Yahweh said to Moses,“ I have seen these people, and behold, they are a stiff- necked people.

Oh that there were such a heart in them that they would fear me and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them and with their children forever!

But they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. Therefore he turned and became their enemy, and he himself fought against them.

but exhort one another day by day, so long as it is called“ today”, lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Yet you wouldn’t go up, but rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God.You murmured in your tents, and said,“ Because Yahweh hated us, he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us.Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our heart melt, saying,‘ The people are greater and taller than we. The cities are great and fortified up to the sky. Moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there!’”Then I said to you,“ Don’t be terrified. Don’t be afraid of them.Yahweh your God, who goes before you, he will fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Egypt before your eyes,and in the wilderness where you have seen how that Yahweh your God carried you, as a man carries his son, in all the way that you went, until you came to this place.”Yet in this thing you didn’t believe Yahweh your God,who went before you on the way, to seek out a place for you to pitch your tents in: in fire by night, to show you by what way you should go, and in the cloud by day.

Know therefore that Yahweh your God doesn’t give you this good land to possess for your righteousness, for you are a stiff- necked people.

When Yahweh sent you from Kadesh Barnea, saying,“ Go up and possess the land which I have given you,” you rebelled against the commandment of Yahweh your God, and you didn’t believe him or listen to his voice.You have been rebellious against Yahweh from the day that I knew you.

Oh that you had listened to my commandments! Then your peace would have been like a river and your righteousness like the waves of the sea.

He who is often rebuked and stiffens his neck will be destroyed suddenly, with no remedy.

He said,“ If you will diligently listen to Yahweh your God’s voice, and will do that which is right in his eyes, and will pay attention to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you, which I have put on the Egyptians; for I am Yahweh who heals you.”

“ Hear, my people, and I will testify to you, Israel, if you would listen to me!

Furthermore Yahweh spoke to me, saying,“ I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff- necked people.

Now don’t be stiff- necked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves to Yahweh, and enter into his sanctuary, which he has sanctified forever, and serve Yahweh your God, that his fierce anger may turn away from you.

But according to your hardness and unrepentant heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath, revelation, and of the righteous judgment of God;
