那時，總長和總督尋找但以理誤國的把柄，為要參他；只是找不着他的錯誤過失，因他忠心辦事，毫無錯誤過失。那些人便說：「我們要找參這但以理的把柄，除非在他神的律法中就尋不着。」

「你們這假冒為善的文士和法利賽人有禍了！因為你們將薄荷、茴香、芹菜獻上十分之一，那律法上更重的事，就是公義、憐憫、信實，反倒不行了。這更重的是你們當行的；那也是不可不行的。你們這瞎眼領路的，蠓蟲你們就濾出來，駱駝你們倒吞下去。「你們這假冒為善的文士和法利賽人有禍了！因為你們洗淨杯盤的外面，裏面卻盛滿了勒索和放蕩。

彼得卻說：「主啊，這是不可的！凡俗物和不潔淨的物，我從來沒有吃過。」第二次有聲音向他說：「神所潔淨的，你不可當作俗物。」
