过了安息日，抹大拉的玛丽亚、雅各的母亲玛丽亚和撒罗米买了香料，要去抹耶稣的遗体。周日清早，太阳刚刚升起，她们就去坟墓那里。途中她们彼此议论说：“谁能替我们滚开墓口那块大石头呢？”她们抬头一看，那块大石头已经滚到一旁。她们进了坟墓，看见一位身穿洁白长袍的青年坐在右边，吓了一跳。那青年对她们说：“不要害怕，你们要找那位被钉十字架的拿撒勒人耶稣吗？祂已经复活了，不在这里。你们看！这是安放祂的地方。你们快回去，告诉祂的门徒，特别是彼得，‘祂先你们一步去了加利利，你们将在那里见到祂，正如祂以前所说的一样。’”她们从坟墓出来，跑走了，战战兢兢，疑惑不已，什么也没有告诉他人，因为她们很害怕。

那时，抹大拉的玛丽亚和另一个玛丽亚坐在坟墓的对面。

周日清晨，天还未亮，抹大拉的玛丽亚就来到坟墓前，发现封住墓口的石头已经挪开了。她赶快跑去告诉西门·彼得和耶稣所爱的那个门徒，说：“有人把主从坟墓里搬走了，不知放到哪里去了。”彼得和那个门徒听了就出去，往坟墓那边跑。两个人一起跑，但那个门徒比彼得跑得快，所以先到了坟墓。他并没有进去，只是探头往里看，看见细麻布还在那里。西门·彼得随后也来了，他进到里边，看到细麻布放在那里，耶稣的裹头巾则卷着放在另一处，没有和细麻布放在一起。先到的那个门徒也进来了，看见这种情形，就信了。因为他们还不明白圣经上有关耶稣必要从死里复活的话。然后，他们各自回家去了。

便回家去预备香料和膏油。安息日到了，她们按律法的规定休息了一天。周日黎明时分，几位妇女带着预备好的香料来到坟前，发现墓口的大石头已经滚到旁边，便进去，却没有看见主耶稣的遗体。正在猜疑之间，突然有两个衣服发光的人站在旁边，她们吓得俯伏在地。那两个人对她们说：“你们为什么在死人中找活人呢？祂不在这里，已经复活了！记住祂在加利利对你们说的话，‘人子必须被交在罪人的手中，被钉在十字架上，在第三天复活。’”她们想起耶稣的话来，便离开墓地回去把事情的经过告诉十一个使徒和其他人。这些妇女就是抹大拉的玛丽亚、约亚娜、雅各的母亲玛丽亚及其他人。
