“兄弟住在一起，他們中間如果有一個死了，沒有留下兒子，死者的妻子就不可出嫁外人；她丈夫的兄弟要向她盡兄弟的本分，娶她為妻，和她同房。她所生的長子要歸亡兄的名下，免得他的名字從以色列中被塗抹了。那人如果不喜歡娶他兄弟的妻子，他兄弟的妻子就要到城門去見長老，說：‘我丈夫的兄弟不肯在以色列中為自己的哥哥立名，不肯對我盡兄弟的本分。’本城的長老就要把那人叫來，對他說明；如果他堅持說：‘我不樂意娶她’，他哥哥的妻子就要當著長老的面前，走到那人跟前，脫去他腳上的鞋子，吐唾沫在他的臉上，說：‘那不為自己哥哥建立家室的，人人都要這樣對待他。’從此，在以色列中他的名字（“他的名字”或譯：“他的家的名字”）必稱為‘脫鞋者之家’。

“老師，摩西曾寫給我們說：‘如果一個人娶了妻子，還沒有兒女就死了，他的弟弟就應當娶他的妻子，為哥哥立後。’

“你們為甚麼稱呼我‘主啊！主啊！’卻不遵行我的吩咐呢？

“不是每一個對我說：‘主啊，主啊！’的人，都能進入天國，唯有遵行我天父旨意的人，才能進去。

於是，猶大對他的媳婦他瑪說：“你回到你父親家裡去守寡，等我的兒子示拉長大。”因為他心裡想：“恐怕示拉也像他兩個哥哥一樣死去。”他瑪就回去，住在她父親的家裡。

“老師，律法中哪一條誡命是最重要的呢？”

於是猶大對俄南說：“你去與你哥哥的妻子親近，向她盡你作弟弟的本分，替你的哥哥立後。”

拿俄米說：“我女兒啊，你們回去吧，為甚麼要跟我去呢？我肚子裡還有兒子作你們的丈夫嗎？

他們派了自己的門徒和希律黨的人一同去問耶穌：“老師，我們知道你為人誠實，照著真理把神的道教導人，不顧忌任何人，因為你不徇情面。
