He returned to Nazareth, his hometown. When he taught there in the synagogue, everyone was amazed and said,“ Where does he get this wisdom and the power to do miracles?”

Coming to his hometown, he began teaching the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed.“ Where did this man get this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked.

The people were surprised when they heard him.“ How does he know so much when he hasn’t been trained?” they asked.So Jesus told them,“ My message is not my own; it comes from God who sent me.

When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching,

Jesus left that part of the country and returned with his disciples to Nazareth, his hometown.The next Sabbath he began teaching in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. They asked,“ Where did he get all this wisdom and the power to perform such miracles?”Then they scoffed,“ He’s just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. And his sisters live right here among us.” They were deeply offended and refused to believe in him.Then Jesus told them,“ A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.”And because of their unbelief, he couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place his hands on a few sick people and heal them.And he was amazed at their unbelief. Then Jesus went from village to village, teaching the people.

Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness.

He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.

When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures.The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free,and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently.Then he began to speak to them.“ The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”Everyone spoke well of him and was amazed by the gracious words that came from his lips.“ How can this be?” they asked.“ Isn’t this Joseph’s son?”Then he said,“ You will undoubtedly quote me this proverb:‘ Physician, heal yourself’— meaning,‘ Do miracles here in your hometown like those you did in Capernaum.’But I tell you the truth, no prophet is accepted in his own hometown.“ Certainly there were many needy widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the heavens were closed for three and a half years, and a severe famine devastated the land.Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them. He was sent instead to a foreigner— a widow of Zarephath in the land of Sidon.And many in Israel had leprosy in the time of the prophet Elisha, but the only one healed was Naaman, a Syrian.”When they heard this, the people in the synagogue were furious.Jumping up, they mobbed him and forced him to the edge of the hill on which the town was built. They intended to push him over the cliff,but he passed right through the crowd and went on his way.

So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth. This fulfilled what the prophets had said:“ He will be called a Nazarene.”

Three days after Paul’s arrival, he called together the local Jewish leaders. He said to them,“ Brothers, I was arrested in Jerusalem and handed over to the Roman government, even though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors.The Romans tried me and wanted to release me, because they found no cause for the death sentence.But when the Jewish leaders protested the decision, I felt it necessary to appeal to Caesar, even though I had no desire to press charges against my own people.I asked you to come here today so we could get acquainted and so I could explain to you that I am bound with this chain because I believe that the hope of Israel— the Messiah— has already come.”They replied,“ We have had no letters from Judea or reports against you from anyone who has come here.But we want to hear what you believe, for the only thing we know about this movement is that it is denounced everywhere.”So a time was set, and on that day a large number of people came to Paul’s lodging. He explained and testified about the Kingdom of God and tried to persuade them about Jesus from the Scriptures. Using the law of Moses and the books of the prophets, he spoke to them from morning until evening.Some were persuaded by the things he said, but others did not believe.And after they had argued back and forth among themselves, they left with this final word from Paul:“ The Holy Spirit was right when he said to your ancestors through Isaiah the prophet,‘ Go and say to this people: When you hear what I say, you will not understand. When you see what I do, you will not comprehend.For the hearts of these people are hardened, and their ears cannot hear, and they have closed their eyes— so their eyes cannot see, and their ears cannot hear, and their hearts cannot understand, and they cannot turn to me and let me heal them.’So I want you to know that this salvation from God has also been offered to the Gentiles, and they will accept it.”

I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.

I have told all your people about your justice. I have not been afraid to speak out, as you, O Lord, well know.I have not kept the good news of your justice hidden in my heart; I have talked about your faithfulness and saving power. I have told everyone in the great assembly of your unfailing love and faithfulness.

The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus.

Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared,“ It was necessary that we first preach the word of God to you Jews. But since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles.
