He also said to the one who had invited Him,“ When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.

耶穌復告主人曰：『爾設宴時、毋邀良朋昆弟戚屬富鄰、誠恐若輩還禮、則爾獲報矣。

Then Jesus said to his host,“ When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.

Then Jesus spoke to his host.“ Suppose you give a lunch or a dinner,” he said.“ Do not invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, or your relatives, or your rich neighbors. If you do, they may invite you to eat with them. So you will be paid back.

He said also to the man who had invited him,“ When you give a dinner or a banquet, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors, lest they also invite you in return and you be repaid.

Then he turned to his host.“ When you put on a luncheon or a banquet,” he said,“ don’t invite your friends, brothers, relatives, and rich neighbors. For they will invite you back, and that will be your only reward.

He also said to the one who had invited him,“ When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid.

Now He also went on to say to the one who had invited Him,“ Whenever you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor wealthy neighbors, otherwise they may also invite you to a meal in return, and that will be your repayment.

Then He also said to him who invited Him,“ When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid.

And he said to him also that had bidden him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor rich neighbors; lest haply they also bid thee again, and a recompense be made thee.

Then said he also to him that bade him, When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor[ thy] rich neighbours; lest they also bid thee again, and a recompence be made thee.

He said also to the man who had invited him,“ When you host a dinner or a banquet, don’t invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid.

He also said to the one who had invited him,“ When you make a dinner or a supper, don’t call your friends, nor your brothers, nor your kinsmen, nor rich neighbors, or perhaps they might also return the favor, and pay you back.

For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same?

My brothers, do not show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.For example, a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and dressed in fine clothes, and a poor man dressed in dirty clothes also comes in.If you look with favor on the man wearing the fine clothes and say,“ Sit here in a good place,” and yet you say to the poor man,“ Stand over there,” or,“ Sit here on the floor by my footstool,”haven’t you discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?Listen, my dear brothers: Didn’t God choose the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that He has promised to those who love Him?Yet you dishonored that poor man. Don’t the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

Oppressing the poor to enrich oneself, and giving to the rich— both lead only to poverty.

“ Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of people, to be seen by them. Otherwise, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.So whenever you give to the poor, don’t sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be applauded by people. I assure you: They’ve got their reward!But when you give to the poor, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them.If you do what is good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that.And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to be repaid in full.But love your enemies, do what is good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is gracious to the ungrateful and evil.Be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.

A poor man is hated even by his neighbor, but there are many who love the rich.

“ Ask all the people of the land and the priests: When you fasted and lamented in the fifth and in the seventh months for these 70 years, did you really fast for Me?When you eat and drink, don’t you eat and drink simply for yourselves?Aren’t these the words that the Lord proclaimed through the earlier prophets when Jerusalem was inhabited and secure, along with its surrounding cities, and when the southern region and the Judean foothills were inhabited?”

He has satisfied the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty.

“ Whenever you fast, don’t be sad-faced like the hypocrites. For they make their faces unattractive so their fasting is obvious to people. I assure you: They’ve got their reward!But when you fast, put oil on your head, and wash your face,so that you don’t show your fasting to people but to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
