亚伯兰穿过那地，到了示剑的地方，摩利的橡树那里。当时，迦南人住在那地。

摩西从全体以色列人中选出了有才能的人，立他们作人民的首领，作千夫长、百夫长、五十夫长、十夫长。他们随时审判人民的案件；有困难的事件，他们就带到摩西那里；所有小事件，由他们自己审判。

耶路．巴力的儿子亚比米勒，到示剑去见他的众母舅，对他们和他母亲的全体族人说：“请你们给示剑的众人说：‘是耶路．巴力的众子七十人都统治你们好呢？还是一个人统治你们好呢？’你们也要记得我是你们的骨肉。”他的众母舅就把这一切话为他说给示剑的众人听；他们的心都倾向亚比米勒，因为他们说：“他本是我们的亲族。”

雅各从巴旦．亚兰回来的时候，平平安安地到了迦南地的示剑城，在城的对面支搭了帐棚。他支搭帐棚的那块地，是他用一百块银子向示剑的父亲哈抹的子孙买来的。

他们就把自己手中所有外族人的神像，和自己耳朵上的环子，都交给雅各；雅各把这些东西埋在示剑附近的橡树底下。
