保羅從米利都打發人往以弗所去，請教會的長老來。他們來到了，保羅就對他們說：『你們自己知道，我從插足在亞西亞的頭一天到如今、一直怎樣和你們往來，怎樣以十二分的謙卑做主的僕人，常常流淚、忍受試煉；這些試煉是因猶太人的計謀而臨到我的。凡有益的、我如何沒有一樣退縮而不傳告你們，而不在公眾面前或挨家教訓你們。不但對猶太人、也對希利尼人、我都鄭重地證明他們在上帝面前應當悔改，對我們主耶穌應當有信心。你看，如今我被聖靈捆綁着，要往耶路撒冷去，在那裏要碰到甚麼、我不知道，只知道聖靈在各城裏都向我鄭重地指證、說有鎖鍊和苦難等着我。但我不為性命作甚麼計算，而看為對自己有價值；比較起來，倒不如完盡了我的跑程、和我從主耶穌所領受的執事職任，鄭重證明上帝恩惠之福音。我素常在你們中間走遍各處，宣傳上帝國之道；看吧，如今我知道你們眾人不能再見我的面了。所以在今天這日子、我確實地告訴你們，你們眾人若流血而滅亡，我乾淨無罪！因為上帝全部的計畫、我並沒有退縮而不傳告你們。聖靈在全羣中立你們做監督，你們要關顧到自己、以及全羣，牧養主的教會，就是他用自己的血所取得來的。我知道我離開了以後，必有兇暴的豺狼要進入你們中間，不顧惜羊羣。就是從你們自己中間、也必有人起來、說乖僻的話，要把門徒牽走、去跟從他們。所以你們要儆醒，記得我三年之久、晝夜不停地流淚勸戒你們每一個人。如今我把你們託付於上帝和他恩惠之道，就是能建立你們，能在一切成聖別的人中間將遺業賜給你們的。我沒有貪圖過一個人的金銀或服裝。你們自己知道，我這兩隻手供應了我和我同伴的需用。我凡事給你們做榜樣，讓你們知道應當這樣勞苦、扶助軟弱的人，記念主耶穌的話；他自己說過：「給予比接受更為有福」』。
