你们自己也都见过，为何全然变为虚妄呢？

其实你们也曾亲眼目睹，为何还讲这些虚妄之言？

你们都亲自见过，你们为什么成了这么虚妄呢？

你們自己也都見過，為何全然變為虛妄呢？

看哪，你們自己也都見過，為何全變為這樣虛妄呢？

其實你們也曾親眼目睹，為何還講這些虛妄之言？

你們都親自見過，你們為甚麼成了這麼虛妄呢？

看哪、你們自己也都見過，為甚麼你們全變為虛妄呢？

爾皆見此、何故成為虛妄、

爾曹咸知斯理、何故出此迂談。

爾曹既知之、何故出此虛誕之語、

You have all seen this yourselves. Why then this meaningless talk?

You have seen those things yourselves. So why do you continue your useless talk?

Behold, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain?

But you have seen all this, yet you say all these useless things to me.

All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk?

Behold, all of you have seen it; Why then do you talk of nothing?

Surely all of you have seen it; Why then do you behave with complete nonsense?

Behold, all ye yourselves have seen it; Why then are ye become altogether vain?

All of you have seen this for yourselves, why do you keep up this empty talk?

Behold, all ye yourselves have seen[ it]; why then are ye thus altogether vain?

Behold, all of you have seen it yourselves; why then have you become altogether vain?

Bear with me and I will speak, and after I have spoken you may mock.

So I reflected on all this, attempting to clear it all up. I concluded that the righteous and the wise, as well as their works, are in the hand of God; whether a person will be loved or hated– no one knows what lies ahead.Everyone shares the same fate– the righteous and the wicked, the good and the bad, the ceremonially clean and unclean, those who offer sacrifices and those who do not. What happens to the good person, also happens to the sinner; what happens to those who make vows, also happens to those who are afraid to make vows.This is the unfortunate fact about everything that happens on earth: the same fate awaits everyone. In addition to this, the hearts of all people are full of evil, and there is folly in their hearts during their lives– then they die.

“ How long will you torment me and crush me with your words?These ten times you have been reproaching me; you are not ashamed to attack me!

Will there be an end to your windy words? Or what provokes you that you answer?

Here is another enigma that occurs on earth: Sometimes there are righteous people who get what the wicked deserve, and sometimes there are wicked people who get what the righteous deserve. I said,“ This also is an enigma.”

How painful are honest words! But what does your reproof prove?Do you intend to criticize mere words, and treat the words of a despairing man as wind?Yes, you would gamble for the fatherless, and auction off your friend.“ Now then, be good enough to look at me; and I will not lie to your face!Relent, let there be no falsehood; reconsider, for my righteousness is intact!

But you, however, are inventors of lies; all of you are worthless physicians!If only you would keep completely silent! For you, that would be wisdom.“ Listen now to my argument, and be attentive to my lips’ contentions.Will you speak wickedly on God’s behalf? Will you speak deceitfully for him?Will you show him partiality? Will you argue the case for God?Would it turn out well if he would examine you? Or as one deceives a man would you deceive him?

For you say,‘ Where now is the nobleman’s house, and where are the tents in which the wicked lived?’Have you never questioned those who travel the roads? Do you not recognize their accounts–that the evil man is spared from the day of his misfortune, that he is delivered from the day of God’s wrath?

“ How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the person who has no strength!How you have advised the one without wisdom, and abundantly revealed your insight!To whom did you utter these words? And whose spirit has come forth from your mouth?

Surely mockery is with me; my eyes must dwell on their hostility.
