Then all the Israelites, the whole army, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the Lord. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the Lord.

“那时，我在亚哈瓦河边那里宣告禁食，为要在我们的神面前谦卑下来，为自己和我们的孩子，以及我们所有的财物寻求神指示一条畅通的道路。

以色列人就起来，上伯特利去求问神，说：“我们之中谁应首先上去，与便雅悯人交战呢？”耶和华说：“犹大应首先上去。”

所有因着以色列神针对被掳归回的人之不忠、对他们所说的话而战兢的人，都聚集到我面前。我惊惧地坐着，直到献晚祭的时候。“献晚祭的时候，我在禁食中起来，穿着撕裂了的衣服和外袍，双膝跪下，向耶和华我的神张开双手，

耶和华说：“现在虽然如此，你们仍要全心全意，以禁食、哭泣、哀号，归向我。”你们要撕裂你们的心肠，不要撕裂你们的衣服。并要归向耶和华你们的神，因为他有恩典有怜悯，不轻易发怒，并且有丰盛的慈爱，随时转意不降灾祸。有谁知道或许他会转意，并且施慈爱，留下余福，就是留下献给耶和华你们的神的素祭和奠祭。你们要在锡安吹号角，把禁食的日子分别为圣，召开严肃会。你们要召集民众，使会众分别为圣；招聚老人，聚集孩童，和在怀中吃奶的婴孩；让新郎从新房出来，新妇从内室出来。让事奉耶和华的祭司在圣殿的廊子和祭坛之间哭泣，让他们说：“耶和华啊！求你怜恤你的子民。不要使你的产业受羞辱，使他们在列国中成为笑谈。为什么容人在万民中讥笑说：‘他们的神在哪里呢？’”于是耶和华为了自己的地发热心，怜恤他的子民。

于是约沙法害怕起来，定意要寻求耶和华，就在犹大全地宣告禁食。

你们要把禁食的日子分别为圣，召开严肃会，聚集众长老和国中所有的居民，到你们的神耶和华的殿里，向耶和华呼求。

尼尼微人信了（“信了”或译：“信服”）神，就宣告禁食，从大到小，都穿上麻衣。这事传到尼尼微王那里，他就起来，离开宝座，脱去王袍，披上麻衣，坐在炉灰中。他又传谕全尼尼微，说：“王和大臣有令：‘人、畜、牛、羊，都不准尝什么，不准吃，也不准喝。不论人畜，都要披上麻衣；各人要恳切呼求神，悔改，离开恶行，摒弃手中的强暴。或者神回心转意，不发烈怒，使我们不致灭亡。’”神看见他们所作的，就是悔改离开恶行，神就转意，不把所说的灾祸降在他们身上了。

于是，他们聚集在米斯巴，打了水，浇奠在耶和华面前；当日他们禁食，并且在那里说：“我们得罪了耶和华。”撒母耳就在米斯巴治理以色列人。
