以掃對雅各說：「我累死了，請你讓我吃這紅的，這紅的湯吧！」因此以掃又叫以東。

我又把雅各和以掃賜給以撒，將西珥山賜給以掃為業。但雅各和他的子孫下到埃及去了。

不可向他們挑戰；他們的地，連腳掌可踏之處，我都不給你們，因我已將西珥山賜給以掃為業。

請我主在僕人前面先走，我要按着在我面前的牲畜和孩子的步伐慢慢前進，直走到西珥我主那裏。」

在何利人的西珥山擊敗何利人，一直到靠近曠野的伊勒‧巴蘭。

以掃帶着他的妻子、兒女和家中所有的人，以及他的牛羊、牲畜和一切財物，就是他在迦南地所得的，往別處去，離開了他的兄弟雅各。因為他們擁有的很多，不能住在一起。因為牲畜的緣故，寄居的地方容不下他們。於是以掃住在西珥山；以掃就是以東。這是以掃的後代，他是西珥山裏以東人的始祖。

他打發使者在他前頭走；他們進了撒瑪利亞的一個村莊，要為他作準備。

這正如耶和華從前為住在西珥的以掃子孫，將何利人從他們面前除滅，使他們得了何利人的地，接續他們在那裏居住，直到今日一樣。

於是，以掃當日起行，回西珥去了。

以掃因他父親給雅各的祝福，就怨恨雅各，心裏說：「為我父親居喪的時候近了，到那時候，我要殺我的弟弟雅各。」有人把利百加大兒子以掃的話告訴利百加，她就派人去，叫了她小兒子雅各來，對他說：「看哪，你哥哥以掃想要殺你來洩恨。

萬軍之耶和華說：「看哪，我要差遣我的使者在我前面預備道路。你們所尋求的主必忽然來到他的殿；立約的使者，就是你們所仰慕的，看哪，快要來到。」

或是一個王出去和別的王打仗，豈不先坐下來酌量，他能不能用一萬兵去抵抗那領二萬兵來攻打他的嗎？若是不能，他就趁敵人還遠的時候，派使者去談和平的條件。
