那使女所生的是按着肉體生的；那自由的婦人所生的是憑着應許生的。

婢出者、依形軀而生、自由出者、乃由應許焉、

婢出者、循人道、婦出者、因應許、

其由婢生者、循血氣而生、其由自主之婦生者、因應許而生、

然婢女之子、乃因肉情而生；而主婦之子、則憑恩諾而生。

His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, but his son by the free woman was born as the result of a divine promise.

Abraham’s son by the slave woman was born in the usual way. But his son by the free woman was born because of God’s promise.

But the son of the slave was born according to the flesh, while the son of the free woman was born through promise.

The son of the slave wife was born in a human attempt to bring about the fulfillment of God’s promise. But the son of the freeborn wife was born as God’s own fulfillment of his promise.

But the one by the slave was born as a result of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born through promise.

But the son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh, and the son by the free woman through the promise.

But he who was of the bondwoman was born according to the flesh, and he of the freewoman through promise,

Howbeit the son by the handmaid is born after the flesh; but the son by the freewoman is born through promise.

But the one by the slave was born according to the impulse of the flesh, while the one by the free woman was born as the result of a promise.

因着信，撒拉自己已過了生育的年齡還能懷孕，因為她認為應許她的那位是可信的；

也不因為是亞伯拉罕的後裔就都是他的兒女；惟獨「從以撒生的才要稱為你的後裔。」這就是說，肉身所生的兒女不是上帝的兒女，惟獨那應許的兒女才算是後裔。

耶和華照着他所說的眷顧撒拉，耶和華實現了他對撒拉的應許。亞伯拉罕年老，到上帝對他說的那所定的時候，撒拉懷了孕，給他生了一個兒子。

有一位說：「明年這時候，我一定會回到你這裏。看哪，你的妻子撒拉會生一個兒子。」撒拉在那人後面的帳棚門口也聽見了。亞伯拉罕和撒拉都年紀老邁，撒拉的月經已停了。撒拉心裏竊笑，說：「我已衰老，我的主也老了，怎能有這喜事呢？」耶和華對亞伯拉罕說：「撒拉為甚麼竊笑，說：『我已年老，果真能生育嗎？』耶和華豈有難成的事嗎？到了所定的時候，我必回到你這裏。明年這時候，撒拉會生一個兒子。」

弟兄們，你們是憑着應許作兒女的，如同以撒一樣。當時，那按着肉體生的迫害了那按着聖靈生的，現在也是這樣。

他在沒有盼望的時候，仍存着盼望來相信，就得以作多國之父，正如先前所說：「你的後裔將要如此。」他將近百歲的時候，雖然想到自己的身體如同已死，撒拉也不可能生育，他的信心還是不軟弱，仍仰望上帝的應許，總沒有因不信而起疑惑，反倒因信而剛強，將榮耀歸給上帝，且滿心相信上帝所應許的必能成就。

上帝又對亞伯拉罕說：「至於你的妻子撒萊，不可再叫她撒萊，她的名要叫撒拉。我必賜福給她，也要從她賜一個兒子給你。我必賜福給撒拉，她要興起多國；必有百姓的君王從她而出。」亞伯拉罕就臉伏於地竊笑，心裏想：「一百歲的人還能有孩子嗎？撒拉已經九十歲了，還能生育嗎？」亞伯拉罕對上帝說：「但願以實瑪利活在你面前。」上帝說：「不！你妻子撒拉必為你生一個兒子，你要給他起名叫以撒。我要與他堅立我的約，成為他後裔永遠的約。

他到底怎麼說呢？「這話語就離你近，就在你口中，在你心裏，」（就是說，我們傳揚所信的話語。）
