我们的神啊，现在，我们还可以说什么呢？只能说：我们又离弃了你的诫命，就是你曾藉着你的仆人众先知所吩咐的。你说：你们进去要得为业之地是污秽的，充满了当地民族的污秽，他们可憎的事使这地从这边到那边都充满了他们的不洁。

神在古时候，曾经多次用种种方法，藉着先知向我们的祖先说话；

耶和华曾藉着他的众先知和先见警告以色列人和犹大人说：“从你们的恶道上转回吧！谨守我的吩咐和我的律例，就是我曾吩咐你们的祖先，和藉着我的仆人众先知传递给你们的一切律法。”可是他们不听从，反而硬着自己的颈项，好像他们的祖先，不信服耶和华他们的神；厌弃他的律例和他与他们的祖先订立的约，以及他对他们的警戒；却信从虚无的神，自己成为虚妄，跟从他们周围的外族人，耶和华曾吩咐他们不可跟从他们的行为。

你降临西奈山上，从天上与他们说话，赐给他们正直的典章、真实的律法、美好的条例与诫命。你使他们认识你的圣安息，藉你仆人摩西向他们颁布诫命、条例和律法。你从天上赐下粮食，给他们充饥，吩咐水从磐石流出来给他们解渴；你又吩咐他们进去占领，你举手起誓要赐给他们的那地。但是我们的列祖狂妄自大，硬着颈项，不听从你的命令。他们拒绝听从，也不记念你在他们中间所行的奇事，硬着颈项，存心悖逆，自立首领，要回到他们为奴之地去。但你是乐意饶恕的神，你有恩典，有怜悯，不轻易发怒，并有丰盛的慈爱，所以你没有撇弃他们。
