When the king heard the woman’s words, he tore his robes. As he went along the wall, the people looked, and they saw that, under his robes, he had sackcloth on his body.

我所選擇、使人刻苦自己的日子難道是這樣的禁食麼？難道只是叫人垂頭像燈心草，拿麻布和爐灰當床鋪麼？難道你要把這樣叫做禁食，作為使永恆主悅納的日子麼？我所選擇的真禁食豈不是以下這些行為：『豈不是打開兇惡的銬鐐，解下軛上的繩索，使被壓制的得自由，折斷一切的軛麼？豈不是把你的食物分給饑餓的人，將流浪的貧困人帶到你家中，見赤身裸體的、給他衣服遮身，而不躲藏避開你骨肉之親麼？

以色列王唸完了信，就撕裂衣服，說：『我，我哪裏是上帝，能使人死、使人活呢？這人竟送信來、叫我使一個人復原、沒有痲瘋屬之病啊！你們請想想，請看看，這人是怎樣找機會來為難我呀。』
