  • Luke 16:19 - Jesus said, “There was a certain rich man who was splendidly clothed in purple and fine linen and who lived each day in luxury.
  • Luke 16:20 - At his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus who was covered with sores.
  • Luke 16:21 - As Lazarus lay there longing for scraps from the rich man’s table, the dogs would come and lick his open sores.
  • Luke 16:22 - “Finally, the poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the heavenly banquet. The rich man also died and was buried,
  • Luke 16:23 - and he went to the place of the dead. There, in torment, he saw Abraham in the far distance with Lazarus at his side.
  • Luke 16:24 - “The rich man shouted, ‘Father Abraham, have some pity! Send Lazarus over here to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue. I am in anguish in these flames.’
  • Luke 16:25 - “But Abraham said to him, ‘Son, remember that during your lifetime you had everything you wanted, and Lazarus had nothing. So now he is here being comforted, and you are in anguish.
  • Jeremiah 5:4 - Then I said, “But what can we expect from the poor? They are ignorant. They don’t know the ways of the Lord. They don’t understand God’s laws.
  • Jeremiah 5:5 - So I will go and speak to their leaders. Surely they know the ways of the Lord and understand God’s laws.” But the leaders, too, as one man, had thrown off God’s yoke and broken his chains.
  • Jeremiah 5:6 - So now a lion from the forest will attack them; a wolf from the desert will pounce on them. A leopard will lurk near their towns, tearing apart any who dare to venture out. For their rebellion is great, and their sins are many.
  • Luke 18:23 - But when the man heard this he became very sad, for he was very rich.
  • Luke 18:24 - When Jesus saw this, he said, “How hard it is for the rich to enter the Kingdom of God!
  • Luke 18:25 - In fact, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!”
  • James 5:1 - Look here, you rich people: Weep and groan with anguish because of all the terrible troubles ahead of you.
  • James 5:2 - Your wealth is rotting away, and your fine clothes are moth-eaten rags.
  • James 5:3 - Your gold and silver are corroded. The very wealth you were counting on will eat away your flesh like fire. This corroded treasure you have hoarded will testify against you on the day of judgment.
  • James 5:4 - For listen! Hear the cries of the field workers whom you have cheated of their pay. The cries of those who harvest your fields have reached the ears of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.
  • James 5:5 - You have spent your years on earth in luxury, satisfying your every desire. You have fattened yourselves for the day of slaughter.
  • James 5:6 - You have condemned and killed innocent people, who do not resist you.
  • James 2:6 - But you dishonor the poor! Isn’t it the rich who oppress you and drag you into court?
  • 1 Timothy 6:17 - Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and not to trust in their money, which is so unreliable. Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment.
  • Psalms 49:6 - They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches.
  • Psalms 49:7 - Yet they cannot redeem themselves from death by paying a ransom to God.
  • Psalms 49:16 - So don’t be dismayed when the wicked grow rich and their homes become ever more splendid.
  • Psalms 49:17 - For when they die, they take nothing with them. Their wealth will not follow them into the grave.
  • Psalms 49:18 - In this life they consider themselves fortunate and are applauded for their success.
  • Psalms 49:19 - But they will die like all before them and never again see the light of day.
  • Matthew 6:2 - When you give to someone in need, don’t do as the hypocrites do—blowing trumpets in the synagogues and streets to call attention to their acts of charity! I tell you the truth, they have received all the reward they will ever get.
