Then he said to them, “Truly I tell you,9:1 Ps 72:19; Rv 22:21 there are some standing here who will not taste death9:1 Mk 13:28–32; 14:25; Jn 21:22–23; 2Pt 3:4 until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”9:1 Lk 6:19
The Transfiguration
After9:2–8 Mt 17:1–8; Lk 9:28–36 six days9:2 Ex 24:15–18; Hs 6:2 Jesus took Peter, James, and John9:2 Mt 10:2; Mk 5:37; 13:3; 14:33; Ac 1:13 and led them up a high mountain9:2 Mt 4:8; 2Pt 1:18 by themselves to be alone. He was transfigured9:2 Rm 12:2; 2Co 3:18 in front of them,
and his clothes9:3 Lk 19:36 became dazzling — extremely white9:3 Rv 3:4 as no launderer on earth could whiten9:3 Rv 7:14 them.
Elijah9:4 Mk 8:28 appeared to them with Moses,9:4 Ps 77:20; Mt 8:4; Heb 3:2 and they were talking with Jesus.
Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
The Power of Faith over a Demon
When9:14–29 Mt 17:14–20; Lk 9:37–42 they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing9:14 Mk 8:11 with them.
When the whole crowd saw him, they were amazed and ran to greet him.
He asked them, “What are you arguing with them about?”
Someone from the crowd answered him, “Teacher,9:17 Mk 4:38; Eph 4:11 I brought my son to you. He has a spirit9:17 Lk 11:24; 1Tm 4:1; 1Jn 4:1 that makes him unable to speak.9:17 Mk 7:37
Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”
He replied to them, “You unbelieving9:19 Lk 12:46 generation, how long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to me.”
So they brought the boy to him. When the spirit saw him, it immediately threw the boy into convulsions. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth.
“How long has this been happening to him?” Jesus asked his father.
“From childhood,” he said.
Immediately the father of the boy cried out, “I do believe; help my unbelief!”
After he had gone into the house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”
The Second Prediction of His Death
Then9:30–32 Mt 17:22–23; Lk 9:43–45 they left that place and made their way through Galilee, but he did not want anyone to know it.9:30 Mk 1:44
For he was teaching9:31 Mt 28:20; Ac 4:2; 2Tm 4:11 his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man9:31 Mk 2:10 is going to be betrayed9:31 Or handed over into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise9:31 Mt 16:21; Lk 18:33; Ac 2:24 three days later.”9:31 Mk 8:31; Lk 9:22
Who Is the Greatest?
They9:33–50 Mt 18:1–10; Lk 9:46–50 came to Capernaum.9:33 Lk 10:15 When he was in the house,9:33 Mk 1:29 he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the way?”9:33 Mk 8:27
But they were silent,9:34 Mk 3:4 because on the way they had been arguing with one another about who was the greatest.9:34 Lk 22:24–27; Ac 8:9
Sitting down, he called the Twelve9:35 Mk 11:11 and said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, he must be last and servant of all.”9:35 Mt 20:16–27; 23:11; Mk 10:43–44; Lk 22:26
