這樣，我們可以說甚麼呢？難道律法是罪嗎？絕對不是。不過，如果不是藉著律法，我就不知道甚麼是罪；如果不是律法說“不可貪心”，我就不知道甚麼是貪心。

那麼，我們要怎麼說呢？難道律法是罪嗎？絕對不是！然而，要不是藉著律法，我就不知道什麼是罪。如果律法沒有說「不可貪心」，我就不知道什麼是貪心；

然則將何言耶、律豈罪乎、非也、非由律則我未嘗知罪、如律不言毋欲、則我不知欲、

然則何以言之、律法豈惡之因乎、曰、不然、非法無以見惡、蓋律法不禁欲、吾末由識欲、

然則何言、律法即罪乎、非也、然非由律法、我不識罪、律法若不云勿貪、則我不識貪、

於此吾人更有何說？將謂法即罪乎？無是理也！法非罪、乃所以燭吾之罪耳。法若不曰「毋淫、」則吾將不知淫之為淫矣。

What shall we say, then? Is the law sinful? Certainly not! Nevertheless, I would not have known what sin was had it not been for the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

What should we say then? That the law is sinful? Not at all! Yet I wouldn’t have known what sin was unless the law had told me. The law says,“ Do not want what belongs to other people.”( Exodus 20:17; Deuteronomy 5:21) If the law hadn’t said that, I would not have known what it was like to want what belongs to others.

What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

Well then, am I suggesting that the law of God is sinful? Of course not! In fact, it was the law that showed me my sin. I would never have known that coveting is wrong if the law had not said,“ You must not covet.”

What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! But I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.

What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? Far from it! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said,“ You shall not covet.”

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said,“ You shall not covet.”

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Howbeit, I had not known sin, except through the law: for I had not known coveting, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet:

What should we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin if it were not for the law. For example, I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, Do not covet.

What shall we say then?[ Is] the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Absolutely not! Certainly, I would not have known sin except through the law. For indeed I would not have known what it means to desire something belonging to someone else if the law had not said,“ Do not covet.”

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? May it never be! However, I wouldn’t have known sin, except through the law. For I wouldn’t have known coveting, unless the law had said,“ You shall not covet.”

沒有一個人可以靠行律法，在神面前得稱為義，因為藉著律法，人對於罪才有充分的認識。

但罪趁著機會，藉著誡命在我裡面發動各樣的貪心，因為沒有律法，罪是死的。

“不可貪愛你鄰舍的房屋；不可貪愛你鄰舍的妻子、僕婢、牛驢和他的任何東西。”

“‘不可貪愛你鄰舍的妻子；不可貪圖你鄰舍的房屋、田地、僕婢、牛驢和你鄰舍的任何東西。’

因為律法帶來刑罰，沒有律法，就沒有違背律法的事。

死的毒刺就是罪，罪的權勢就是律法。

那“不可姦淫，不可殺人，不可偷盜，不可貪心”等等的誡命，都包括在“愛人如己”這一句話裡面了。

耶和華的律法是完全的，能使人心甦醒；耶和華的法度是堅定的，能使愚人有智慧。耶和華的訓詞是正直的，能使人心快樂；耶和華的命令是清潔的，能使人的眼睛明亮。耶和華的話語（“耶和華的話語”原文作“耶和華的敬畏”）是潔淨的，能堅立到永遠；耶和華的典章是真實的，完全公義；都比金子寶貴，比大量的精金更寶貴；比蜜甘甜，比蜂房滴下來的蜜更甘甜；並且你的僕人也藉著這些得到警戒，謹守這些就得著大賞賜。誰能知道自己的錯誤呢？求你赦免我隱而未現的過失。

我且照著人的見解來說，我們的不義若彰顯神的義，我們可以說甚麼呢？難道降怒的神是不義的嗎？

至於淫亂和任何污穢或貪心的事，在你們中間連提都不可提，才合聖徒的體統。

於是，女人見那棵樹的果子好作食物，又悅人的眼目，而且討人喜愛，能使人有智慧，就摘下果子來吃了；又給了和她在一起的丈夫，他也吃了。

既是這樣，那良善的反而使我死嗎？絕對不是！但罪藉著那良善的使我死，就顯出真是罪，為了要使罪藉著誡命變成更加邪惡。

有一天近黃昏的時候，大衛從床上起來，在王宮的平頂上散步。他從平頂上看見一個婦人在洗澡；這婦人容貌非常美麗。

我看一切圓滿的事都有盡頭，只有你的命令是廣闊無邊的。

我在戰利品中，看見了一件美麗的示拿衣服、二千二百八十克銀子，和一條重五百七十克的金條；我因貪愛這些物件，就把它們拿去了；現在埋藏在我帳棚的地裡，銀子在底下。”

於是他對眾人說：“你們要謹慎，遠離一切貪心，因為人的生命並不在於家道豐富。”

他們要田地，就去搶奪；想要房屋，就去強取。他們欺壓人和他的家眷，取人和人的產業。

可是我告訴你們，凡是看見婦女就動淫念的，心裡已經犯了姦淫。

那麼，論到在血統（“血統”原文作“肉身”）上作我們祖先的亞伯拉罕所經驗的，我們可以說甚麼呢？

我從來沒有貪圖任何人的金銀或衣服。

我們從前屬肉體的時候，罪惡的情慾藉著律法在我們的肢體裡發動，就結出死亡的果子。

不要愛世界和世上的東西。人若愛世界，愛父的心就不在他裡面了。原來世上的一切，就如肉體的私慾，眼目的私慾和今生的驕傲，都不是出於父，而是從世界來的。

所以要治死你們在地上的肢體，就如淫亂、污穢、邪情、惡慾和貪心，貪心就是拜偶像。

耶斯列人拿伯在耶斯列有一個葡萄園，靠近撒瑪利亞王亞哈的王宮。亞哈對拿伯說：“把你的葡萄園讓給我，我可以用作菜園，因為你的葡萄園靠近我的王宮。我要把一個更好的葡萄園與你交換。如果你喜歡，我也可以按市價給你銀子。”可是拿伯對亞哈說：“耶和華絕對不容許我把祖業給你。”亞哈因為耶斯列人拿伯對他說：“我不能把祖業給你”，就悶悶不樂回到宮裡。他躺在床上，臉朝向內，也不吃飯。

不要放縱邪情私慾，像那些不認識神的外族人一樣；

因為罪藉著誡命把握著機會來欺騙我，並且殺了我。

那卻怎麼樣呢？我們不在律法之下，而在恩典之下，就可以犯罪嗎？絕對不可！
