If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about— but not before God.

Did he become right with God because of something he did? If so, he could brag about it. But he couldn’t brag to God.

Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said to him,“ What have you done to us? How have I sinned against you, that you have brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? You have done deeds to me that ought not to be done!”Abimelech said to Abraham,“ What did you see, that you have done this thing?”Abraham said,“ Because I thought,‘ Surely the fear of God is not in this place. They will kill me for my wife’s sake.’Besides, she is indeed my sister, the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and she became my wife.When God caused me to wander from my father’s house, I said to her,‘ This is your kindness which you shall show to me. Everywhere that we go, say of me,“ He is my brother.”’”

Pharaoh called Abram and said,“ What is this that you have done to me? Why didn’t you tell me that she was your wife?

For if I preach the Good News, I have nothing to boast about; for necessity is laid on me; but woe is to me if I don’t preach the Good News.

For who makes you different? And what do you have that you didn’t receive? But if you did receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

Pharaoh commanded men concerning him, and they escorted him away with his wife and all that he had.

I have therefore my boasting in Christ Jesus in things pertaining to God.

But I refrain, so that no man may think more of me than that which he sees in me or hears from me.By reason of the exceeding greatness of the revelations, that I should not be exalted excessively, a thorn in the flesh was given to me: a messenger of Satan to torment me, that I should not be exalted excessively.Concerning this thing, I begged the Lord three times that it might depart from me.He has said to me,“ My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me.

But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from those who desire an occasion, that in which they boast, they may be found even as we.
