我儕知律所言、乃為律下者言之、以塞眾口、使舉世服罪於上帝前、

吾儕知律法所言、指法下人言之、以塞諸口、使舉世服罪於上帝前、

我儕知律法所言、為律法下之人言之、以塞諸口、使舉世服罪於天主前、

夫法之所言、所以昭示法內之人、亦所以塞夫人之口、而使舉世皆服罪於天主之前也。

Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.

What the law says, it says to those who are ruled by the law. Its purpose is to shut every mouth and make the whole world accountable to God.

Obviously, the law applies to those to whom it was given, for its purpose is to keep people from having excuses, and to show that the entire world is guilty before God.

“ Indeed, I know that this is true. But how can mere mortals prove their innocence before God?Though they wished to dispute with him, they could not answer him one time out of a thousand. (niv)

But Scripture has locked up everything under the control of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.Before the coming of this faith, we were held in custody under the law, locked up until the faith that was to come would be revealed.
