For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

The one in authority serves God for your good. But if you do wrong, watch out! Rulers don’t carry a sword for no reason at all. They serve God. And God is carrying out his anger through them. The ruler punishes anyone who does wrong.

The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for they have the power to punish you. They are God’s servants, sent for the very purpose of punishing those who do what is wrong.

The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death; when the avenger comes upon the murderer, the avenger shall put the murderer to death.If anyone with malice aforethought shoves another or throws something at them intentionally so that they dieor if out of enmity one person hits another with their fist so that the other dies, that person is to be put to death; that person is a murderer. The avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when they meet.“‘ But if without enmity someone suddenly pushes another or throws something at them unintentionallyor, without seeing them, drops on them a stone heavy enough to kill them, and they die, then since that other person was not an enemy and no harm was intended,the assembly must judge between the accused and the avenger of blood according to these regulations.The assembly must protect the one accused of murder from the avenger of blood and send the accused back to the city of refuge to which they fled. The accused must stay there until the death of the high priest, who was anointed with the holy oil.“‘ But if the accused ever goes outside the limits of the city of refuge to which they fledand the avenger of blood finds them outside the city, the avenger of blood may kill the accused without being guilty of murder. Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow. (niv)

Praise be to the Lord your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the Lord’s eternal love for Israel, he has made you king to maintain justice and righteousness.” (niv)

Any of the Israelites or any foreigner residing among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly. (niv)

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. (niv)

A king’s wrath is a messenger of death, but the wise will appease it. (niv)

A wise king winnows out the wicked; he drives the threshing wheel over them. (niv)

and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister. The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. (niv)

A king’s wrath strikes terror like the roar of a lion; those who anger him forfeit their lives. (niv)

Then I said,“ Listen, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel. Should you not embrace justice,you who hate good and love evil; who tear the skin from my people and the flesh from their bones;who eat my people’s flesh, strip off their skin and break their bones in pieces; who chop them up like meat for the pan, like flesh for the pot?”Then they will cry out to the Lord, but he will not answer them. At that time he will hide his face from them because of the evil they have done. (niv)

“ How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. (niv)

Hear this, you leaders of Jacob, you rulers of Israel, who despise justice and distort all that is right; (niv)

Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey; they shed blood and kill people to make unjust gain. (niv)

When a king sits on his throne to judge, he winnows out all evil with his eyes. (niv)

and have grown fat and sleek. Their evil deeds have no limit; they do not seek justice. They do not promote the case of the fatherless; they do not defend the just cause of the poor. (niv)

Obey the king’s command, I say, because you took an oath before God.Do not be in a hurry to leave the king’s presence. Do not stand up for a bad cause, for he will do whatever he pleases.Since a king’s word is supreme, who can say to him,“ What are you doing?”Whoever obeys his command will come to no harm, and the wise heart will know the proper time and procedure. (niv)

If the avenger of blood comes in pursuit, the elders must not surrender the fugitive, because the fugitive killed their neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought. (niv)
