I’ve been in pain ever since I was young. I’ve been close to death. You have made me suffer terrible things. I have lost all hope.

“ Therefore I will not keep silent; I will speak out in the anguish of my spirit, I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.Am I the sea, or the monster of the deep, that you put me under guard?When I think my bed will comfort me and my couch will ease my complaint,even then you frighten me with dreams and terrify me with visions,so that I prefer strangling and death, rather than this body of mine.I despise my life; I would not live forever. Let me alone; my days have no meaning.

He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint. My heart has turned to wax; it has melted within me.My mouth is dried up like a potsherd, and my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth; you lay me in the dust of death.

My spirit is broken, my days are cut short, the grave awaits me.

“ Awake, sword, against my shepherd, against the man who is close to me!” declares the Lord Almighty.“ Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered, and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

My days have passed, my plans are shattered. Yet the desires of my heartturn night into day; in the face of the darkness light is near.If the only home I hope for is the grave, if I spread out my bed in the realm of darkness,if I say to corruption,‘ You are my father,’ and to the worm,‘ My mother’ or‘ My sister,’where then is my hope— who can see any hope for me?Will it go down to the gates of death? Will we descend together into the dust?”

Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin, he will see his offspring and prolong his days, and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

All day long I have been afflicted, and every morning brings new punishments.

And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.
