蕩蕩造化主。誰能與比侔。祈主毋緘默。祈主毋長幽。

See how your enemies growl, how your foes rear their heads.

See how your enemies are growling like dogs. See how they are rising up against you.

For behold, your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have raised their heads.

See how your enemies make an uproar; those who hate you have acted arrogantly.

For behold, Your enemies make an uproar, And those who hate You have exalted themselves.

For behold, Your enemies make a tumult; And those who hate You have lifted up their head.

For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult; And they that hate thee have lifted up the head.

See how Your enemies make an uproar; those who hate You have acted arrogantly.

For, lo, thine enemies make a tumult: and they that hate thee have lifted up the head.

For look, your enemies are making a commotion; those who hate you are hostile.

For, behold, your enemies are stirred up. Those who hate you have lifted up their heads.

Those who hate the Lord would cringe before him; they would be doomed forever.

That is the story of how the people of Israel defeated Midian, which never recovered. Throughout the rest of Gideon’s lifetime— about forty years— there was peace in the land.

you spoke long ago by the Holy Spirit through our ancestor David, your servant, saying,‘ Why were the nations so angry? Why did they waste their time with futile plans?The kings of the earth prepared for battle; the rulers gathered together against the Lord and against his Messiah.’“ In fact, this has happened here in this very city! For Herod Antipas, Pontius Pilate the governor, the Gentiles, and the people of Israel were all united against Jesus, your holy servant, whom you anointed.

“ I warned the proud,‘ Stop your boasting!’ I told the wicked,‘ Don’t raise your fists!Don’t raise your fists in defiance at the heavens or speak with such arrogance.’”

And because of your raging against me and your arrogance, which I have heard for myself, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the same road on which you came.”

Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying,“ I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!”

A mob quickly formed against Paul and Silas, and the city officials ordered them stripped and beaten with wooden rods.

Don’t overlook what your enemies have said or their growing uproar.

At this their anger boiled, and they began shouting,“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”Soon the whole city was filled with confusion. Everyone rushed to the amphitheater, dragging along Gaius and Aristarchus, who were Paul’s traveling companions from Macedonia.Paul wanted to go in, too, but the believers wouldn’t let him.Some of the officials of the province, friends of Paul, also sent a message to him, begging him not to risk his life by entering the amphitheater.Inside, the people were all shouting, some one thing and some another. Everything was in confusion. In fact, most of them didn’t even know why they were there.The Jews in the crowd pushed Alexander forward and told him to explain the situation. He motioned for silence and tried to speak.But when the crowd realized he was a Jew, they started shouting again and kept it up for about two hours:“ Great is Artemis of the Ephesians! Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”At last the mayor was able to quiet them down enough to speak.“ Citizens of Ephesus,” he said.“ Everyone knows that Ephesus is the official guardian of the temple of the great Artemis, whose image fell down to us from heaven.Since this is an undeniable fact, you should stay calm and not do anything rash.You have brought these men here, but they have stolen nothing from the temple and have not spoken against our goddess.“ If Demetrius and the craftsmen have a case against them, the courts are in session and the officials can hear the case at once. Let them make formal charges.And if there are complaints about other matters, they can be settled in a legal assembly.I am afraid we are in danger of being charged with rioting by the Roman government, since there is no cause for all this commotion. And if Rome demands an explanation, we won’t know what to say.”Then he dismissed them, and they dispersed.

They will fight you, but they will fail. For I am with you, and I will take care of you. I, the Lord, have spoken!”

Why are the nations so angry? Why do they waste their time with futile plans?The kings of the earth prepare for battle; the rulers plot together against the Lord and against his anointed one.

But when his heart and mind were puffed up with arrogance, he was brought down from his royal throne and stripped of his glory.He was driven from human society. He was given the mind of a wild animal, and he lived among the wild donkeys. He ate grass like a cow, and he was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he learned that the Most High God rules over the kingdoms of the world and appoints anyone he desires to rule over them.“ You are his successor, O Belshazzar, and you knew all this, yet you have not humbled yourself.For you have proudly defied the Lord of heaven and have had these cups from his Temple brought before you. You and your nobles and your wives and concubines have been drinking wine from them while praising gods of silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood, and stone— gods that neither see nor hear nor know anything at all. But you have not honored the God who gives you the breath of life and controls your destiny!

As the conflict grew more violent, the commander was afraid they would tear Paul apart. So he ordered his soldiers to go and rescue him by force and take him back to the fortress.

And because of your raging against me and your arrogance, which I have heard for myself, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth. I will make you return by the same road on which you came.”

The crowd listened until Paul said that word. Then they all began to shout,“ Away with such a fellow! He isn’t fit to live!”

Listen! The armies of many nations roar like the roaring of the sea. Hear the thunder of the mighty forces as they rush forward like thundering waves.

The floods have risen up, O Lord. The floods have roared like thunder; the floods have lifted their pounding waves.

But some of the Jews were jealous, so they gathered some troublemakers from the marketplace to form a mob and start a riot. They attacked the home of Jason, searching for Paul and Silas so they could drag them out to the crowd.

There your enemies shouted their victorious battle cries; there they set up their battle standards.

The whole city was rocked by these accusations, and a great riot followed. Paul was grabbed and dragged out of the Temple, and immediately the gates were closed behind him.

“ Whom have you been defying and ridiculing? Against whom did you raise your voice? At whom did you look with such haughty eyes? It was the Holy One of Israel!
