Rescue me from the mire, do not let me sink; deliver me from those who hate me, from the deep waters.

Save me from the trouble I’m in. It’s like slippery mud, so don’t let me sink in it. Save me from those who hate me. Save me from the deep water I’m in.

Deliver me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters.

The God of our forefathers raised up Jesus, whom you seized and killed by hanging him on a tree.God exalted him to his right hand as Leader and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.

One deep stream calls out to another at the sound of your waterfalls; all your billows and waves overwhelm me.

He said to them,“ My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.”Going a little farther, he threw himself to the ground and prayed that if it were possible the hour would pass from him.He said,“ Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.”Then he came and found them sleeping, and said to Peter,“ Simon, are you sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour?Stay awake and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”He went away again and prayed the same thing.When he came again he found them sleeping; they could not keep their eyes open. And they did not know what to tell him.He came a third time and said to them,“ Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough of that! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners.Get up, let us go. Look! My betrayer is approaching!”

So the officials took Jeremiah and put him in the cistern of Malkijah, one of the royal princes, that was in the courtyard of the guardhouse. There was no water in the cistern, only mud. So when they lowered Jeremiah into the cistern with ropes he sank in the mud.An Ethiopian, Ebed Melech, a court official in the royal palace, heard that Jeremiah had been put in the cistern. While the king was holding court at the Benjamin Gate,Ebed Melech departed the palace and went to speak to the king. He said to him,“ Your royal Majesty, those men have been very wicked in all that they have done to the prophet Jeremiah. They have thrown him into a cistern and he is sure to die of starvation there because there is no food left in the city.Then the king gave Ebed Melech the Ethiopian the following order:“ Take thirty men with you from here and go pull the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he dies.”So Ebed Melech took the men with him and went to a room under the treasure room in the palace. He got some worn-out clothes and old rags from there and let them down by ropes to Jeremiah in the cistern.Ebed Melech called down to Jeremiah,“ Put these rags and worn-out clothes under your armpits to pad the ropes. Jeremiah did as Ebed Melech instructed.So they pulled Jeremiah up from the cistern with ropes. Jeremiah, however, still remained confined to the courtyard of the guardhouse.

They surround me and say hateful things; they attack me for no reason.

I thirst for God, for the living God. I say,“ When will I be able to go and appear in God’s presence?”

Do not let those who are my enemies for no reason gloat over me! Do not let those who hate me without cause carry out their wicked schemes!

The water would have overpowered us; the current would have overwhelmed us.The raging water would have overwhelmed us.

I relied completely on the LORD, and he turned toward me and heard my cry for help.He lifted me out of the watery pit, out of the slimy mud. He placed my feet on a rock and gave me secure footing.He gave me reason to sing a new song, praising our God. May many see what God has done, so that they might swear allegiance to him and trust in the LORD!

Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit devour me!

I have called on your name, O LORD, from the deepest pit.

O sovereign LORD, intervene on my behalf for the sake of your reputation! Because your loyal love is good, deliver me!

But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying,‘ We do not want this man to be king over us!’

See my pain and suffering! Forgive all my sins!Watch my enemies, for they outnumber me; they hate me and want to harm me.

But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be their king, bring them here and slaughter them in front of me!’”

Around three o’clock Jesus cried out with a loud voice,“ Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means,“ My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”
