My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away.

But Jesus’ friends, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance watching.

“ My relatives stay far away, and my friends have turned against me.My family is gone, and my close friends have forgotten me.My servants and maids consider me a stranger. I am like a foreigner to them.When I call my servant, he doesn’t come; I have to plead with him!My breath is repulsive to my wife. I am rejected by my own family.

“ By chance a priest came along. But when he saw the man lying there, he crossed to the other side of the road and passed him by.A Temple assistant walked over and looked at him lying there, but he also passed by on the other side.

But this is all happening to fulfill the words of the prophets as recorded in the Scriptures.” At that point, all the disciples deserted him and fled.

So they arrested him and led him to the high priest’s home. And Peter followed at a distance.

You have taken away my companions and loved ones. Darkness is my closest friend.

Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people.

But the time is coming— indeed it’s here now— when you will be scattered, each one going his own way, leaving me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me.

Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins!

You, too, have given no help. You have seen my calamity, and you are afraid.But why? Have I ever asked you for a gift? Have I begged for anything of yours for myself?Have I asked you to rescue me from my enemies, or to save me from ruthless people?
