Then I proclaimed a fast there at the river of Ahava, to humble ourselves before our God, to seek from Him a safe journey for us, our little ones, and all our possessions.

I did not sit in a circle of revelers and celebrate. Because of Your hand upon me I sat alone, For You filled me with indignation.

When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,

But if you do not listen to it, My soul will weep in secret for such pride; And my eyes will shed And stream down tears, Because the flock of the Lord has been taken captive.Say to the king and the queen mother,“ Take a lowly seat, For your beautiful crown Has come down from your head.”

The elders of the daughter of Zion Sit on the ground and are silent. They have thrown dust on their heads; They have put on sackcloth. The virgins of Jerusalem Have bowed their heads to the ground.My eyes fail because of tears, My spirit is greatly troubled; My heart is poured out on the earth Because of the destruction of the daughter of my people, When little ones and infants languish In the streets of the city.

My eyes bring pain to my soul Because of all the daughters of my city.

And they said to me,“ The remnant there in the province who survived the captivity are in great distress and disgrace, and the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and its gates have been burned with fire.”Now when I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

And I said to the king,“ May the king live forever. Why should my face not be sad when the city, the site of my fathers’ tombs, is desolate and its gates have been consumed by fire?”

You who have escaped the sword, Go! Do not stay! Remember the Lord from far away, And let Jerusalem come to your mind.We are ashamed because we have heard rebuke; Disgrace has covered our faces, Because strangers have entered The holy places of the Lord’s house.

Their heart cried out to the Lord:“ You wall of the daughter of Zion, Let your tears stream down like a river day and night; Give yourself no relief, Let your eyes have no rest.

I remember these things and pour out my soul within me. For I used to go over with the multitude and walk them to the house of God, With a voice of joy and thanksgiving, a multitude celebrating a festival.

When they looked from a distance and did not recognize him, they raised their voices and wept. And each of them tore his robe, and they threw dust over their heads toward the sky.Then they sat down on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, with no one speaking a word to him, for they saw that his pain was very great.

Now a river flowed out of Eden to water the garden; and from there it divided and became four rivers.The name of the first is Pishon; it flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold.The gold of that land is good; the bdellium and the onyx stone are there as well.The name of the second river is Gihon; it flows around the whole land of Cush.The name of the third river is Tigris; it flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

So I gave my attention to the Lord God, to seek Him by prayer and pleading, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes.

In those days, I, Daniel, had been mourning for three entire weeks.I did not eat any tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all until the entire three weeks were completed.

“ Be joyful with Jerusalem and rejoice for her, all you who love her; Be exceedingly glad with her, all you who mourn over her,

And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth.”
