I call on the Lord in my distress, and he answers me.

While Jesus was here on earth, he offered prayers and pleadings, with a loud cry and tears, to the one who could rescue him from death. And God heard his prayers because of his deep reverence for God.

He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

From the depths of despair, O Lord, I call for your help.

Then call on me when you are in trouble, and I will rescue you, and you will give me glory.”

Don’t turn away from me in my time of distress. Bend down to listen, and answer me quickly when I call to you.

Death wrapped its ropes around me; the terrors of the grave overtook me. I saw only trouble and sorrow.Then I called on the name of the Lord:“ Please, Lord, save me!”

They told him,“ This is what King Hezekiah says: Today is a day of trouble, insults, and disgrace. It is like when a child is ready to be born, but the mother has no strength to deliver the baby.But perhaps the Lord your God has heard the Assyrian chief of staff, sent by the king to defy the living God, and will punish him for his words. Oh, pray for those of us who are left!”

After Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it, he went up to the Lord’s Temple and spread it out before the Lord.And Hezekiah prayed this prayer before the Lord:“ O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, God of Israel, you are enthroned between the mighty cherubim! You alone are God of all the kingdoms of the earth. You alone created the heavens and the earth.Bend down, O Lord, and listen! Open your eyes, O Lord, and see! Listen to Sennacherib’s words of defiance against the living God.“ It is true, Lord, that the kings of Assyria have destroyed all these nations.And they have thrown the gods of these nations into the fire and burned them. But of course the Assyrians could destroy them! They were not gods at all— only idols of wood and stone shaped by human hands.Now, O Lord our God, rescue us from his power; then all the kingdoms of the earth will know that you alone, O Lord, are God.”

I was glad when they said to me,“ Let us go to the house of the Lord.”

Oh, praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord, you who serve at night in the house of the Lord.

Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp.

Lord, remember David and all that he suffered.

“ Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.

From my earliest youth my enemies have persecuted me. Let all Israel repeat this:

I lift my eyes to you, O God, enthroned in heaven.

Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good.

When the Lord brought back his exiles to Jerusalem, it was like a dream!

How wonderful and pleasant it is when brothers live together in harmony!

I look up to the mountains— does my help come from there?

Those who trust in the Lord are as secure as Mount Zion; they will not be defeated but will endure forever.

In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free.

How joyful are those who fear the Lord— all who follow his ways!

What if the Lord had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat:
