They asked, and he brought them quail; he fed them well with the bread of heaven.

I am the bread of life.Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.This is the bread that comes down out of heaven, so that anyone may eat from it and not die.I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats from this bread, he will live forever; and the bread which I will give for the life of the world also is My flesh.”Then the Jews began to argue with one another, saying,“ How can this man give us His flesh to eat?”So Jesus said to them,“ Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.The one who eats My flesh and drinks My blood remains in Me, and I in him.Just as the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, the one who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.This is the bread that came down out of heaven, not as the fathers ate and died; the one who eats this bread will live forever.”

Now a wind burst forth from the Lord and it brought quail from the sea, and dropped them beside the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and a day’s journey on the other side all around the camp, and about two cubits deep on the surface of the ground.And the people spent all that day, all night, and all the next day, and they gathered the quail( the one who gathered least gathered ten homers) and spread them out for themselves all around the camp.While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the Lord was kindled against the people, and the Lord struck the people with a very severe plague.

Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written:‘ He gave them bread out of heaven to eat.’ ”Jesus then said to them,“ Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven.For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven and gives life to the world.”

And He humbled you and let you go hungry, and fed you with the manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, in order to make you understand that man shall not live on bread alone, but man shall live on everything that comes out of the mouth of the Lord.

Now the rabble who were among them had greedy cravings; and the sons of Israel also wept again and said,“ Who will give us meat to eat?We remember the fish which we used to eat for free in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic;but now our appetite is gone. There is nothing at all to look at except this manna!”Now the manna was like coriander seed, and its appearance like that of bdellium.The people would roam about and gather it and grind it between two millstones, or pound it in the mortar, and boil it in the pot and make loaves with it; and its taste was like the taste of cake baked with oil.When the dew came down on the camp at night, the manna would come down with it.

“ I have heard the grumblings of the sons of Israel; speak to them, saying,‘ At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’ ”So it came about at evening that the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp.When the layer of dew evaporated, behold, on the surface of the wilderness there was a fine flake like thing, fine as the frost on the ground.When the sons of Israel saw it, they said to one another,“ What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them,“ It is the bread which the Lord has given you to eat.This is what the Lord has commanded:‘ Everyone gather as much as he will eat; you shall take an omer apiece according to the number of people each of you has in his tent.’ ”The sons of Israel did so, and some gathered much and some little.When they measured it by the omer, the one who had gathered much did not have too much, and the one who had gathered little did not have too little; everyone gathered as much as he would eat.Moses said to them,“ No one is to leave any of it until morning.”But they did not listen to Moses, and some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and stank; and Moses was angry with them.They gathered it morning by morning, everyone as much as he would eat; but when the sun became hot, it would melt.Now on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one. When all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses,then he said to them,“ This is what the Lord meant: Tomorrow is a Sabbath observance, a holy Sabbath to the Lord. Bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over put aside to be kept until morning.”So they put it aside until morning, as Moses had ordered, and it did not stink nor was there a maggot in it.Then Moses said,“ Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the Lord; today you will not find it in the field.Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none.”Yet it came about on the seventh day that some of the people went out to gather, but they found none.Then the Lord said to Moses,“ How long do you refuse to keep My commandments and My instructions?See, the Lord has given you the Sabbath; for that reason He gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Remain, everyone, in his place; no one is to leave his place on the seventh day.”So the people rested on the seventh day.And the house of Israel named the bread manna, and it was like coriander seed, white, and its taste was like wafers with honey.Then Moses said,“ This is what the Lord has commanded:‘ A full omer of it is to be kept safe throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread that I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.’ ”And Moses said to Aaron,“ Take a jar and put a full omer of manna in it, and place it before the Lord to be kept safe throughout your generations.”As the Lord commanded Moses, so Aaron placed it before the Testimony, to be kept.And the sons of Israel ate the manna for forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna until they came to the border of the land of Canaan.

And the manna ceased on the day after they had eaten some of the produce of the land, so that the sons of Israel no longer had manna, but they ate some of the yield of the land of Canaan during that year.

Yet He commanded the clouds above And opened the doors of heaven;He rained down manna upon them to eat, And gave them food from heaven.Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.He made the east wind blow in the sky And by His power He directed the south wind.When He rained meat upon them like the dust, Even winged fowl like the sand of the seas,He let them fall in the midst of their camp, All around their dwellings.
