The Lord works righteousness and justice for all the oppressed.

“ For the oppression of the poor, for the sighing of the needy, Now I will arise,” says the Lord;“ I will set him in the safety for which he yearns.”

Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The Lord gives freedom to the prisoners.

“ You shall not oppress a hired servant who is poor and needy, whether one of your brethren or one of the aliens who is in your land within your gates.Each day you shall give him his wages, and not let the sun go down on it, for he is poor and has set his heart on it; lest he cry out against you to the Lord, and it be sin to you.

In you they have made light of father and mother; in your midst they have oppressed the stranger; in you they have mistreated the fatherless and the widow.

Do not rob the poor because he is poor, Nor oppress the afflicted at the gate;For the Lord will plead their cause, And plunder the soul of those who plunder them.

“ Is this not the fast that I have chosen: To loose the bonds of wickedness, To undo the heavy burdens, To let the oppressed go free, And that you break every yoke?Is it not to share your bread with the hungry, And that you bring to your house the poor who are cast out; When you see the naked, that you cover him, And not hide yourself from your own flesh?

The Lord also will be a refuge for the oppressed, A refuge in times of trouble.

In you they take bribes to shed blood; you take usury and increase; you have made profit from your neighbors by extortion, and have forgotten Me,” says the Lord GOD.“ Behold, therefore, I beat My fists at the dishonest profit which you have made, and at the bloodshed which has been in your midst.Can your heart endure, or can your hands remain strong, in the days when I shall deal with you? I, the Lord, have spoken, and will do it.

For He will deliver the needy when he cries, The poor also, and him who has no helper.

You who hate good and love evil; Who strip the skin from My people, And the flesh from their bones;Who also eat the flesh of My people, Flay their skin from them, Break their bones, And chop them in pieces Like meat for the pot, Like flesh in the caldron.”Then they will cry to the Lord, But He will not hear them; He will even hide His face from them at that time, Because they have been evil in their deeds.

Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you!Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.Indeed the wages of the laborers who mowed your fields, which you kept back by fraud, cry out; and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth.You have lived on the earth in pleasure and luxury; you have fattened your hearts as in a day of slaughter.You have condemned, you have murdered the just; he does not resist you.

Woe to those who devise iniquity, And work out evil on their beds! At morning light they practice it, Because it is in the power of their hand.They covet fields and take them by violence, Also houses, and seize them. So they oppress a man and his house, A man and his inheritance.Therefore thus says the Lord:“ Behold, against this family I am devising disaster, From which you cannot remove your necks; Nor shall you walk haughtily, For this is an evil time.

For He shall stand at the right hand of the poor, To save him from those who condemn him.

But You have seen, for You observe trouble and grief, To repay it by Your hand. The helpless commits himself to You; You are the helper of the fatherless.Break the arm of the wicked and the evil man; Seek out his wickedness until You find none.The Lord is King forever and ever; The nations have perished out of His land.Lord, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will prepare their heart; You will cause Your ear to hear,To do justice to the fatherless and the oppressed, That the man of the earth may oppress no more.

He who oppresses the poor reproaches his Maker, But he who honors Him has mercy on the needy.

“ This is the portion of a wicked man with God, And the heritage of oppressors, received from the Almighty:If his children are multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.Those who survive him shall be buried in death, And their widows shall not weep,Though he heaps up silver like dust, And piles up clothing like clay—He may pile it up, but the just will wear it, And the innocent will divide the silver.He builds his house like a moth, Like a booth which a watchman makes.The rich man will lie down, But not be gathered up; He opens his eyes, And he is no more.Terrors overtake him like a flood; A tempest steals him away in the night.The east wind carries him away, and he is gone; It sweeps him out of his place.It hurls against him and does not spare; He flees desperately from its power.Men shall clap their hands at him, And shall hiss him out of his place.

He will bring justice to the poor of the people; He will save the children of the needy, And will break in pieces the oppressor.

But you have dishonored the poor man. Do not the rich oppress you and drag you into the courts?

if you do not oppress the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, or walk after other gods to your hurt,then I will cause you to dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.“ Behold, you trust in lying words that cannot profit.Will you steal, murder, commit adultery, swear falsely, burn incense to Baal, and walk after other gods whom you do not know,and then come and stand before Me in this house which is called by My name, and say,‘ We are delivered to do all these abominations’?Has this house, which is called by My name, become a den of thieves in your eyes? Behold, I, even I, have seen it,” says the Lord.“ But go now to My place which was in Shiloh, where I set My name at the first, and see what I did to it because of the wickedness of My people Israel.And now, because you have done all these works,” says the Lord,“ and I spoke to you, rising up early and speaking, but you did not hear, and I called you, but you did not answer,therefore I will do to the house which is called by My name, in which you trust, and to this place which I gave to you and your fathers, as I have done to Shiloh.And I will cast you out of My sight, as I have cast out all your brethren— the whole posterity of Ephraim.

Do not remove the ancient landmark, Nor enter the fields of the fatherless;

that you will take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say:“ How the oppressor has ceased, The golden city ceased!The Lord has broken the staff of the wicked, The scepter of the rulers;He who struck the people in wrath with a continual stroke, He who ruled the nations in anger, Is persecuted and no one hinders.The whole earth is at rest and quiet; They break forth into singing.Indeed the cypress trees rejoice over you, And the cedars of Lebanon, Saying,‘ Since you were cut down, No woodsman has come up against us.’“ Hell from beneath is excited about you, To meet you at your coming; It stirs up the dead for you, All the chief ones of the earth; It has raised up from their thrones All the kings of the nations.They all shall speak and say to you:‘ Have you also become as weak as we? Have you become like us?Your pomp is brought down to Sheol, And the sound of your stringed instruments; The maggot is spread under you, And worms cover you.’“ How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, You who weakened the nations!For you have said in your heart:‘ I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north;I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High.’Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, To the lowest depths of the Pit.“ Those who see you will gaze at you, And consider you, saying:‘ Is this the man who made the earth tremble, Who shook kingdoms,Who made the world as a wilderness And destroyed its cities, Who did not open the house of his prisoners?’“ All the kings of the nations, All of them, sleep in glory, Everyone in his own house;But you are cast out of your grave Like an abominable branch, Like the garment of those who are slain, Thrust through with a sword, Who go down to the stones of the pit, Like a corpse trodden underfoot.You will not be joined with them in burial, Because you have destroyed your land And slain your people. The brood of evildoers shall never be named.Prepare slaughter for his children Because of the iniquity of their fathers, Lest they rise up and possess the land, And fill the face of the world with cities.”“ For I will rise up against them,” says the Lord of hosts,“ And cut off from Babylon the name and remnant, And offspring and posterity,” says the Lord.“ I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, And marshes of muddy water; I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” says the Lord of hosts.The Lord of hosts has sworn, saying,“ Surely, as I have thought, so it shall come to pass, And as I have purposed, so it shall stand:That I will break the Assyrian in My land, And on My mountains tread him underfoot. Then his yoke shall be removed from them, And his burden removed from their shoulders.This is the purpose that is purposed against the whole earth, And this is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.For the Lord of hosts has purposed, And who will annul it? His hand is stretched out, And who will turn it back?”This is the burden which came in the year that King Ahaz died.“ Do not rejoice, all you of Philistia, Because the rod that struck you is broken; For out of the serpent’s roots will come forth a viper, And its offspring will be a fiery flying serpent.The firstborn of the poor will feed, And the needy will lie down in safety; I will kill your roots with famine, And it will slay your remnant.Wail, O gate! Cry, O city! All you of Philistia are dissolved; For smoke will come from the north, And no one will be alone in his appointed times.”What will they answer the messengers of the nation? That the Lord has founded Zion, And the poor of His people shall take refuge in it.
