Did not Hezekiah fear the Lord and seek his favor? And did not the Lord relent, so that he did not bring the disaster he pronounced against them? We are about to bring a terrible disaster on ourselves!”

Ahimelek answered the king,“ Who of all your servants is as loyal as David, the king’s son-in-law, captain of your bodyguard and highly respected in your household?Was that day the first time I inquired of God for him? Of course not! Let not the king accuse your servant or any of his father’s family, for your servant knows nothing at all about this whole affair.”

“ Does our law condemn a man without first hearing him to find out what he has been doing?”

But Ebed-Melek, a Cushite, an official in the royal palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. While the king was sitting in the Benjamin Gate,Ebed-Melek went out of the palace and said to him,“ My lord the king, these men have acted wickedly in all they have done to Jeremiah the prophet. They have thrown him into a cistern, where he will starve to death when there is no longer any bread in the city.”Then the king commanded Ebed-Melek the Cushite,“ Take thirty men from here with you and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the cistern before he dies.”

because I rescued the poor who cried for help, and the fatherless who had none to assist them.The one who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing.I put on righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban.I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame.I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger.I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth.

Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him,“ Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly.He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. The Lord won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him for no reason?”Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath:“ As surely as the Lord lives, David will not be put to death.”So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.

May the groans of the prisoners come before you; with your strong arm preserve those condemned to die.
