My son, fear Yahweh and the king. Don’t join those who are rebellious;

Fear the Lord and the king, my son, and do not join with rebellious officials,

My son, have respect for the Lord and the king. Don’t join with officials who disobey them.

Fear the LORD, my child, as well as the king, and do not associate with rebels,

Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God.Therefore he who resists the authority withstands the ordinance of God; and those who withstand will receive to themselves judgment.For rulers are not a terror to the good work, but to the evil. Do you desire to have no fear of the authority? Do that which is good, and you will have praise from the authority,for he is a servant of God to you for good. But if you do that which is evil, be afraid, for he doesn’t bear the sword in vain; for he is a servant of God, an avenger for wrath to him who does evil.Therefore you need to be in subjection, not only because of the wrath, but also for conscience’ sake.For this reason you also pay taxes, for they are servants of God’s service, continually doing this very thing.Therefore give everyone what you owe: if you owe taxes, pay taxes; if customs, then customs; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Remind them to be in subjection to rulers and to authorities, to be obedient, to be ready for every good work,

Therefore subject yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether to the king, as supreme;or to governors, as sent by him for vengeance on evildoers and for praise to those who do well.For this is the will of God, that by well- doing you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish men:as free, and not using your freedom for a cloak of wickedness, but as bondservants of God.Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took some men.They rose up before Moses, with some of the children of Israel, two hundred fifty princes of the congregation, called to the assembly, men of renown.They assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said to them,“ You take too much on yourself, since all the congregation are holy, everyone of them, and Yahweh is among them! Why do you lift yourselves up above Yahweh’s assembly?”

“ When you saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, you said to me,‘ No, but a king shall reign over us;’ when Yahweh your God was your king.Now therefore see the king whom you have chosen, and whom you have asked for. Behold, Yahweh has set a king over you.If you will fear Yahweh, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then both you and also the king who reigns over you are followers of Yahweh your God.But if you will not listen to Yahweh’s voice, but rebel against the commandment of Yahweh, then Yahweh’s hand will be against you, as it was against your fathers.“ Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which Yahweh will do before your eyes.Isn’t it wheat harvest today? I will call to Yahweh, that he may send thunder and rain; and you will know and see that your wickedness is great, which you have done in Yahweh’s sight, in asking for a king.”So Samuel called to Yahweh; and Yahweh sent thunder and rain that day. Then all the people greatly feared Yahweh and Samuel.All the people said to Samuel,“ Pray for your servants to Yahweh your God, that we not die; for we have added to all our sins this evil, to ask for a king.”

A messenger came to David, saying,“ The hearts of the men of Israel are after Absalom.”David said to all his servants who were with him at Jerusalem,“ Arise! Let’s flee; or else none of us will escape from Absalom. Hurry to depart, lest he overtake us quickly, and bring down evil on us, and strike the city with the edge of the sword.”The king’s servants said to the king,“ Behold, your servants are ready to do whatever my lord the king chooses.”The king went out, and all his household after him. The king left ten women, who were concubines, to keep the house.The king went out, and all the people after him; and they stayed in Beth Merhak.All his servants passed on beside him; and all the Cherethites, and all the Pelethites, and all the Gittites, six hundred men who came after him from Gath, passed on before the king.Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite,“ Why do you also go with us? Return, and stay with the king; for you are a foreigner, and also an exile. Return to your own place.Whereas you came but yesterday, should I today make you go up and down with us, since I go where I may? Return, and take back your brothers. Mercy and truth be with you.”Ittai answered the king, and said,“ As Yahweh lives, and as my lord the king lives, surely in what place my lord the king is, whether for death or for life, your servant will be there also.”David said to Ittai,“ Go and pass over.” Ittai the Gittite passed over, and all his men, and all the little ones who were with him.All the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over. The king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.Behold, Zadok also came, and all the Levites with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God; and they set down God’s ark; and Abiathar went up, until all the people finished passing out of the city.The king said to Zadok,“ Carry God’s ark back into the city. If I find favor in Yahweh’s eyes, he will bring me again, and show me both it, and his habitation;but if he says,‘ I have no delight in you;’ behold, here I am. Let him do to me as seems good to him.”The king said also to Zadok the priest,“ Aren’t you a seer? Return into the city in peace, and your two sons with you, Ahimaaz your son, and Jonathan the son of Abiathar.Behold, I will stay at the fords of the wilderness, until word comes from you to inform me.”Zadok therefore and Abiathar carried God’s ark to Jerusalem again; and they stayed there.David went up by the ascent of the Mount of Olives, and wept as he went up; and he had his head covered, and went barefoot. All the people who were with him each covered his head, and they went up, weeping as they went up.Someone told David, saying,“ Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” David said,“ Yahweh, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness.”When David had come to the top, where God was worshiped, behold, Hushai the Archite came to meet him with his tunic torn, and earth on his head.David said to him,“ If you pass on with me, then you will be a burden to me;but if you return to the city, and tell Absalom,‘ I will be your servant, O king. As I have been your father’s servant in time past, so I will now be your servant; then will you defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.’Don’t you have Zadok and Abiathar the priests there with you? Therefore whatever you hear out of the king’s house, tell it to Zadok and Abiathar the priests.Behold, they have there with them their two sons, Ahimaaz, Zadok’s son, and Jonathan, Abiathar’s son. Send to me everything that you shall hear by them.”So Hushai, David’s friend, came into the city; and Absalom came into Jerusalem.

He said to his men,“ Yahweh forbid that I should do this thing to my lord, Yahweh’s anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is Yahweh’s anointed.”

I say,“ Keep the king’s command!” because of the oath to God.Don’t be hasty to go out of his presence. Don’t persist in an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him,for the king’s word is supreme. Who can say to him,“ What are you doing?”Whoever keeps the commandment shall not come to harm, and his wise heart will know the time and procedure.

Israel saw the great work which Yahweh did to the Egyptians, and the people feared Yahweh; and they believed in Yahweh and in his servant Moses.

They said to him,“ Behold, you are old, and your sons don’t walk in your ways. Now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.”But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said,“ Give us a king to judge us.” Samuel prayed to Yahweh.Yahweh said to Samuel,“ Listen to the voice of the people in all that they tell you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me as the king over them.

When all Israel saw that the king didn’t listen to them, the people answered the king, saying,“ What portion have we in David? We don’t have an inheritance in the son of Jesse. To your tents, Israel! Now see to your own house, David.” So Israel departed to their tents.

They said to him,“ Caesar’s.” Then he said to them,“ Give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”
