because judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment.What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.If one of you says to them,“ Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?

“ Then they will call to me but I will not answer; they will look for me but will not find me,

When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood!Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong.Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

“ But he refused. Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened.“ Then the master called the servant in.‘ You wicked servant,’ he said,‘ I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to.Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.“ This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

“ This is what the Lord Almighty said:‘ Administer true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another.Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the foreigner or the poor. Do not plot evil against each other.’“ But they refused to pay attention; stubbornly they turned their backs and covered their ears.They made their hearts as hard as flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the Lord Almighty had sent by his Spirit through the earlier prophets. So the Lord Almighty was very angry.“‘ When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen,’ says the Lord Almighty.

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

But now you have turned around and profaned my name; each of you has taken back the male and female slaves you had set free to go where they wished. You have forced them to become your slaves again.“ Therefore this is what the Lord says: You have not obeyed me; you have not proclaimed freedom to your own people. So I now proclaim‘ freedom’ for you, declares the Lord—‘ freedom’ to fall by the sword, plague and famine. I will make you abhorrent to all the kingdoms of the earth.

Those who give to the poor will lack nothing, but those who close their eyes to them receive many curses.

For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

“ Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter— when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood?Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I.“ If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk,

At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the top of their voices, they all rushed at him,

“ Then he will say to those on his left,‘ Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink,I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’“ They also will answer,‘ Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’“ He will reply,‘ Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’“ Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears,

Now the men and their wives raised a great outcry against their fellow Jews.Some were saying,“ We and our sons and daughters are numerous; in order for us to eat and stay alive, we must get grain.”Others were saying,“ We are mortgaging our fields, our vineyards and our homes to get grain during the famine.”Still others were saying,“ We have had to borrow money to pay the king’s tax on our fields and vineyards.Although we are of the same flesh and blood as our fellow Jews and though our children are as good as theirs, yet we have to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”

They cried for help, but there was no one to save them— to the Lord, but he did not answer.

If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them.Rather, be openhanded and freely lend them whatever they need.Be careful not to harbor this wicked thought:“ The seventh year, the year for canceling debts, is near,” so that you do not show ill will toward the needy among your fellow Israelites and give them nothing. They may then appeal to the Lord against you, and you will be found guilty of sin.Give generously to them and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.There will always be poor people in the land. Therefore I command you to be openhanded toward your fellow Israelites who are poor and needy in your land.

I also shook out the folds of my robe and said,“ In this way may God shake out of their house and possessions anyone who does not keep this promise. So may such a person be shaken out and emptied!” At this the whole assembly said,“ Amen,” and praised the Lord. And the people did as they had promised.

Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading,‘ Sir, open the door for us.’“ But he will answer,‘ I don’t know you or where you come from.’
