他們到了以實各谷，從那裏砍下葡萄樹枝，上面有一掛葡萄，兩個人用槓抬着，又帶了一些石榴和無花果。以色列人從那裏砍下一掛葡萄，所以那地方就叫以實各谷。他們窺探那地四十天之後，就回來了。他們來到巴蘭曠野的加低斯，摩西、亞倫，以及以色列全會眾那裏，向他們和全會眾報告，又把那地的果子給他們看。他們告訴摩西說：「我們到了你派我們去的那地，果然是流奶與蜜之地；這就是那地的果子。但是住那地的百姓很強悍，城鎮又大又堅固，我們也在那裏看見了亞衲族人。亞瑪力人住在尼革夫；赫人、耶布斯人和亞摩利人住在山區；迦南人住在沿海一帶和約旦河旁。」迦勒在摩西面前安撫百姓，說：「我們立刻上去得那地吧！我們必能征服它。」但那些和他同去的人卻說：「我們不能上去攻打那些百姓，因為他們比我們強大。」於是探子中有人向以色列人散佈有關所窺探之地的謠言，說：「我們所走過、所窺探之地是吞沒居民之地，並且我們在那裏所看見的百姓都身材高大。我們在那裏看見巨人，就是巨人中的亞衲族人。我們在自己眼中像蚱蜢一樣，而在他們眼中，我們也確是這樣。」全會眾大聲喧嚷，那夜百姓哭號。以色列眾人向摩西和亞倫發怨言，全會眾對他們說：「我們寧願死在埃及地，寧願死在這曠野！耶和華為甚麼要把我們領到那地，讓我們倒在刀下呢？我們的妻子和孩子必成為擄物。我們回埃及去豈不更好嗎？」他們彼此說：「我們不如選一個領袖，回埃及去吧！」摩西和亞倫在以色列全會眾面前臉伏於地。窺探那地的人中，嫩的兒子約書亞和耶孚尼的兒子迦勒撕裂衣服，對以色列全會眾說：「我們所走過、所窺探之地是極美之地。耶和華若喜愛我們，就必領我們進入那地，把這流奶與蜜之地賜給我們。但你們不可背叛耶和華，也不要怕那地的百姓，因為他們是我們的食物。保護他們的已經離開他們，耶和華卻與我們同在。不要怕他們！」當全會眾正說着要拿石頭打死他們的時候，耶和華的榮光在會幕中向以色列眾人顯現。

於是他們起身上山區去，到以實各谷，窺探那地。他們的手帶着那地的一些果子，下到我們這裏，回報我們說：『耶和華－我們的神所賜給我們的是美地。』「你們卻不肯上去，竟違背了耶和華－你們神的指示，在帳棚內發怨言說：『耶和華因為恨我們，所以將我們從埃及地領出來，要把我們交在亞摩利人的手中，除滅我們。我們上哪裏去呢？我們的弟兄使我們膽戰心驚，說那裏的百姓比我們又大又高，那裏的城鎮又大，城牆又堅固，如天一樣高，並且我們在那裏看見亞衲族人。』
