“‘ On the tenth day of this seventh month hold a sacred assembly. You must deny yourselves and do no work.

“‘ On the tenth day of the seventh month, come together for a special service. You must not eat anything on that day. You must not do any work on it.

“ On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation and afflict yourselves. You shall do no work,

“ Ten days later, on the tenth day of the same month, you must call another holy assembly. On that day, the Day of Atonement, the people must go without food and must do no ordinary work.

“ You are to hold a sacred assembly on the tenth day of this seventh month and practice self-denial; do not do any work.

‘ Then on the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy assembly, and you shall humble yourselves; you shall not do any work.

‘ On the tenth day of this seventh month you shall have a holy convocation. You shall afflict your souls; you shall not do any work.

And on the tenth day of this seventh month ye shall have a holy convocation; and ye shall afflict your souls: ye shall do no manner of work;

Yet when they were ill, I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting. When my prayers returned to me unanswered, (niv)

“ This is to be a lasting ordinance for you: On the tenth day of the seventh month you must deny yourselves and not do any work— whether native- born or a foreigner residing among you—because on this day atonement will be made for you, to cleanse you. Then, before the Lord, you will be clean from all your sins.It is a day of sabbath rest, and you must deny yourselves; it is a lasting ordinance. (niv)

Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Day of Atonement. So Paul warned them, (niv)

There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. (niv)

I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.” (niv)

‘ Why have we fasted,’ they say,‘ and you have not seen it? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you have not noticed?’“ Yet on the day of your fasting, you do as you please and exploit all your workers.Your fasting ends in quarreling and strife, and in striking each other with wicked fists. You cannot fast as you do today and expect your voice to be heard on high.Is this the kind of fast I have chosen, only a day for people to humble themselves? Is it only for bowing one’s head like a reed and for lying in sackcloth and ashes? Is that what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord? (niv)

For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin— (niv)

The Lord said to Moses,“ The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, and present a food offering to the Lord.Do not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God.Those who do not deny themselves on that day must be cut off from their people.I will destroy from among their people anyone who does any work on that day.You shall do no work at all. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations to come, wherever you live.It is a day of sabbath rest for you, and you must deny yourselves. From the evening of the ninth day of the month until the following evening you are to observe your sabbath.” (niv)

The Lord, the Lord Almighty, called you on that day to weep and to wail, to tear out your hair and put on sackcloth. (niv)

No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (niv)

I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. (niv)

“ And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. (niv)

Those who sow with tears will reap with songs of joy.Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them. (niv)

yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us.Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death.See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. (niv)

Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (niv)

by asking the priests of the house of the Lord Almighty and the prophets,“ Should I mourn and fast in the fifth month, as I have done for so many years?” (niv)

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. (niv)
