These are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh.

Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said,“ We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we will certainly prevail over it.”

By no means will you come into the land where I swore to settle you, except for Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

The sons of Caleb the son of Jephunneh were Iru, Elah, and Naam; and the son of Elah was Kenaz.

Then the sons of Judah approached Joshua in Gilgal, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him,“ You know the word which the Lord spoke to Moses the man of God on account of you and me in Kadesh barnea.I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh barnea to spy out the land, and I brought word back to him as it was in my heart.Nevertheless my brothers who went up with me made the heart of the people melt with fear; but I followed the Lord my God fully.So Moses swore on that day, saying,‘ The land on which your foot has walked shall certainly be an inheritance to you and to your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God fully.’And now behold, the Lord has let me live, just as He spoke, these forty five years, from the time that the Lord spoke this word to Moses, when Israel walked in the wilderness; and now behold, I am eighty five years old today.I am still as strong today as I was on the day Moses sent me; as my strength was then, so my strength is now, for war and for going out and coming in.Now then, give me this hill country about which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day that Anakim were there, with great fortified cities; perhaps the Lord will be with me, and I will drive them out just as the Lord has spoken.”So Joshua blessed him and gave Hebron to Caleb the son of Jephunneh as an inheritance.Therefore, Hebron became the inheritance of Caleb the son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite to this day, because he followed the Lord God of Israel fully.Now the name of Hebron was previously Kiriath arba; for Arba was the greatest man among the Anakim. Then the land was at rest from war.

But as for My servant Caleb, because he has had a different spirit and has followed Me fully, I will bring him into the land which he entered, and his descendants shall take possession of it.

For the Lord had said of them,“ They shall certainly die in the wilderness.” And not a man was left of them, except Caleb the son of Jephunneh and Joshua the son of Nun.

And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering.Now an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense.Zechariah was troubled when he saw the angel, and fear gripped him.But the angel said to him,“ Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall name him John.You will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice over his birth.For he will be great in the sight of the Lord; and he will drink no wine or liquor, and he will be filled with the Holy Spirit while still in his mother’s womb.

Then Moses spoke to the Lord, saying,“ May the Lord, the God of the spirits of humanity, appoint a man over the congregation,who will go out and come in before them, and lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the Lord will not be like sheep that have no shepherd.”So the Lord said to Moses,“ Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him;and have him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation, and commission him in their sight.And you shall put some of your authority on him, so that all the congregation of the sons of Israel will obey him.Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his command they shall go out, and at his command they shall come in, both he and all the sons of Israel with him, all the congregation.”Then Moses did just as the Lord commanded him; he took Joshua and had him stand before Eleazar the priest and before all the congregation.Then he laid his hands on him and commissioned him, just as the Lord had spoken through Moses.

But Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh remained alive out of those men who went to spy out the land.

And Caleb said,“ Whoever attacks Kiriath sepher and captures it, I will give him my daughter Achsah as a wife.”Now Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, captured it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah as a wife.Then it happened that when she came to him, she incited him to ask her father for a field. Then later, she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her,“ What do you want?”She said to him,“ Give me a blessing: since you have given me the land of the Negev, give me springs of water also.” So Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs.

Now he gave to Caleb the son of Jephunneh a portion among the sons of Judah, in accordance with the command of the Lord to Joshua, namely, Kiriath arba, Arba being the father of Anak( that is, Hebron).And Caleb drove out from there the three sons of Anak: Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai, the children of Anak.Then he went up from there against the inhabitants of Debir; now the name of Debir previously was Kiriath sepher.And Caleb said,“ The one who attacks Kiriath sepher and captures it, I will give him Achsah my daughter as a wife.”Othniel the son of Kenaz, the brother of Caleb, captured it; so he gave him Achsah his daughter as a wife.And it happened that when she came to him, she incited him to ask her father for a field. Then Moses called to Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel,“ Be strong and courageous, for you will go with this people into the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance.And the Lord is the one who is going ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not desert you or abandon you. Do not fear and do not be dismayed.”So Moses wrote this Law and gave it to the priests, the sons of Levi who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and to all the elders of Israel.Then Moses commanded them, saying,“ At the end of every seven years, at the time of the year of the release of debts, at the Feast of Booths,when all Israel comes to appear before the Lord your God at the place which He will choose, you shall read this Law before all Israel so that they hear it.Assemble the people, the men, the women, the children, and the stranger who is in your town, so that they may hear and learn and fear the Lord your God, and be careful to follow all the words of this Law.And their children, who have not known, will hear and learn to fear the Lord your God, as long as you live on the land which you are about to cross the Jordan to possess.”Then the Lord said to Moses,“ Behold, the time for you to die is near; call Joshua and present yourselves at the tent of meeting, and I will commission him.” So Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves at the tent of meeting.And the Lord appeared in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the entrance of the tent.The Lord said to Moses,“ Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers; and this people will arise and play the prostitute with the foreign gods of the land into the midst of which they are going, and they will abandon Me and break My covenant which I have made with them.Then My anger will be kindled against them on that day, and I will abandon them and hide My face from them, and they will be consumed, and many evils and troubles will find them; so they will say on that day,‘ Is it not because our God is not among us that these evils have found us?’
