When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the Lord and the fire died down.

The people came to Moses, and said,“ We have sinned, because we have spoken against Yahweh and against you. Pray to Yahweh, that he take away the serpents from us.” Moses prayed for the people.

“ Get away from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment!” They fell on their faces.Moses said to Aaron,“ Take your censer, put fire from the altar in it, lay incense on it, carry it quickly to the congregation, and make atonement for them; for wrath has gone out from Yahweh! The plague has begun.”Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the middle of the assembly. The plague had already begun among the people. He put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.

Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective.

Moses returned to Yahweh, and said,“ Oh, this people have sinned a great sin, and have made themselves gods of gold.Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin— and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written.”

Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah, and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, saying,“ Pray now to Yahweh our God for us.”

Now therefore leave me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them, and that I may consume them; and I will make of you a great nation.”Moses begged Yahweh his God, and said,“ Yahweh, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, that you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?Why should the Egyptians talk, saying,‘ He brought them out for evil, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the surface of the earth?’ Turn from your fierce wrath, and turn away from this evil against your people.Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them,‘ I will multiply your offspring as the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’”So Yahweh turned away from the evil which he said he would do to his people.

He said,“ If now I have found favor in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go among us, even though this is a stiff- necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”

Then Yahweh said to me,“ Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind would not turn toward this people. Cast them out of my sight, and let them go out!

When they finished eating the grass of the land, then I said,“ Lord Yahweh, forgive, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”Yahweh relented concerning this.“ It shall not be,” says Yahweh.Thus the Lord Yahweh showed me and behold, the Lord Yahweh called for judgment by fire; and it dried up the great deep, and would have devoured the land.Then I said,“ Lord Yahweh, stop, I beg you! How could Jacob stand? For he is small.”Yahweh relented concerning this.“ This also shall not be,” says the Lord Yahweh.

My little children, I write these things to you so that you may not sin. If anyone sins, we have a Counselor with the Father, Jesus Christ, the righteous.And he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world.

For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens;

Simon answered,“ Pray for me to the Lord, that none of the things which you have spoken happen to me.”

and said to Jeremiah the prophet,“ Please let our supplication be presented before you, and pray for us to Yahweh your God, even for all this remnant; for we are left but a few of many, as your eyes see us;

For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure with which Yahweh was angry against you to destroy you. But Yahweh listened to me that time also.Yahweh was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. I prayed for Aaron also at the same time.

It may be Yahweh your God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to defy the living God, and will rebuke the words which Yahweh your God has heard. Therefore lift up your prayer for the remnant that is left.’”

Moses said to Yahweh,“ Then the Egyptians will hear it; for you brought up this people in your might from among them.They will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you Yahweh are among this people; for you Yahweh are seen face to face, and your cloud stands over them, and you go before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night.Now if you killed this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of you will speak, saying,‘ Because Yahweh was not able to bring this people into the land which he swore to them, therefore he has slain them in the wilderness.’Now please let the power of the Lord be great, according as you have spoken, saying,‘ Yahweh is slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness, forgiving iniquity and disobedience; and he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and on the fourth generation.’Please pardon the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your loving kindness, and just as you have forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.”Yahweh said,“ I have pardoned according to your word;

Abraham came near, and said,“ Will you consume the righteous with the wicked?What if there are fifty righteous within the city? Will you consume and not spare the place for the fifty righteous who are in it?May it be far from you to do things like that, to kill the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be like the wicked. May that be far from you. Shouldn’t the Judge of all the earth do right?”Yahweh said,“ If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare the whole place for their sake.”Abraham answered,“ See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord, although I am dust and ashes.What if there will lack five of the fifty righteous? Will you destroy all the city for lack of five?” He said,“ I will not destroy it if I find forty- five there.”He spoke to him yet again, and said,“ What if there are forty found there?” He said,“ I will not do it for the forty’s sake.”He said,“ Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak. What if there are thirty found there?” He said,“ I will not do it if I find thirty there.”He said,“ See now, I have taken it on myself to speak to the Lord. What if there are twenty found there?” He said,“ I will not destroy it for the twenty’s sake.”He said,“ Oh don’t let the Lord be angry, and I will speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He said,“ I will not destroy it for the ten’s sake.”Yahweh went his way, as soon as he had finished communing with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.

Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had Moses, his chosen, not stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, so that he wouldn’t destroy them.

When he killed them, then they inquired after him. They returned and sought God earnestly.They remembered that God was their rock, the Most High God, their redeemer.
