When the people cried to Moses, he prayed to the LORD, and the fire died out.

When the people cried out to Moses, he prayed to the Lord and the fire died down.

Then the people came to Moses and said,“ We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD that he would take away the snakes from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

“ Get away from this community, so that I can consume them in an instant!” But they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.Then Moses said to Aaron,“ Take the censer, put burning coals from the altar in it, place incense on it, and go quickly into the assembly and make atonement for them, for wrath has gone out from the LORD– the plague has begun!”So Aaron did as Moses commanded and ran into the middle of the assembly, where the plague was just beginning among the people. So he placed incense on the coals and made atonement for the people.He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was stopped.

So confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great effectiveness.

So Moses returned to the LORD and said,“ Alas, this people has committed a very serious sin, and they have made for themselves gods of gold.But now, if you will forgive their sin…, but if not, wipe me out from your book that you have written.”

King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to the prophet Jeremiah. He told them to say,“ Please pray to the LORD our God on our behalf.”

So now, leave me alone so that my anger can burn against them and I can destroy them, and I will make from you a great nation.”But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God and said,“ O LORD, why does your anger burn against your people, whom you have brought out from the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand?Why should the Egyptians say,‘ For evil he led them out to kill them in the mountains and to destroy them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger, and relent of this evil against your people.Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel your servants, to whom you swore by yourself and told them,‘ I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken about I will give to your descendants, and they will inherit it forever.’”Then the LORD relented over the evil that he had said he would do to his people.

and said,“ If now I have found favor in your sight, O Lord, let my Lord go among us, for we are a stiff-necked people; pardon our iniquity and our sin, and take us for your inheritance.”

Then the LORD said to me,“ Even if Moses and Samuel stood before me pleading for these people, I would not feel pity for them! Get them away from me! Tell them to go away!

When they had completely consumed the earth’s vegetation, I said,“ Sovereign LORD, forgive Israel! How can Jacob survive? He is too weak!”The LORD decided not to do this.“ It will not happen,” the LORD said.The sovereign LORD showed me this: I saw the sovereign LORD summoning a shower of fire. It consumed the great deep and devoured the fields.I said,“ Sovereign LORD, stop! How can Jacob survive? He is too weak!”The LORD decided not to do this. The sovereign LORD said,“ This will not happen either.”

( My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin.) But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the Righteous One,and he himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for our sins but also for the whole world.

For it is indeed fitting for us to have such a high priest: holy, innocent, undefiled, separate from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

But Simon replied,“ You pray to the Lord for me so that nothing of what you have said may happen to me.”

They said to him,“ Please grant our request and pray to the LORD your God for all those of us who are still left alive here. For, as you yourself can see, there are only a few of us left out of the many there were before.

For I was terrified at the LORD’s intense anger that threatened to destroy you. But he listened to me this time as well.The LORD was also angry enough at Aaron to kill him, but at that time I prayed for him too.

Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all these things the chief adviser has spoken on behalf of his master, the king of Assyria, who sent him to taunt the living God. When the LORD your God hears, perhaps he will punish him for the things he has said. So pray for this remnant that remains.’”

Moses said to the LORD,“ When the Egyptians hear it– for you brought up this people by your power from among them–then they will tell it to the inhabitants of this land. They have heard that you, LORD, are among this people, that you, LORD, are seen face to face, that your cloud stands over them, and that you go before them by day in a pillar of cloud and in a pillar of fire by night.If you kill this entire people at once, then the nations that have heard of your fame will say,‘ Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he killed them in the wilderness.’So now, let the power of my Lord be great, just as you have said,‘ The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loyal love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children until the third and fourth generations.’Please forgive the iniquity of this people according to your great loyal love, just as you have forgiven this people from Egypt even until now.”Then the LORD said,“ I have forgiven them as you asked.

Abraham approached and said,“ Will you sweep away the godly along with the wicked?What if there are fifty godly people in the city? Will you really wipe it out and not spare the place for the sake of the fifty godly people who are in it?Far be it from you to do such a thing– to kill the godly with the wicked, treating the godly and the wicked alike! Far be it from you! Will not the judge of the whole earth do what is right?”So the LORD replied,“ If I find in the city of Sodom fifty godly people, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”Then Abraham asked,“ Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord( although I am but dust and ashes),what if there are five less than the fifty godly people? Will you destroy the whole city because five are lacking?” He replied,“ I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there.”Abraham spoke to him again,“ What if forty are found there?” He replied,“ I will not do it for the sake of the forty.”Then Abraham said,“ May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak! What if thirty are found there?” He replied,“ I will not do it if I find thirty there.”Abraham said,“ Since I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, what if only twenty are found there?” He replied,“ I will not destroy it for the sake of the twenty.”Finally Abraham said,“ May the Lord not be angry so that I may speak just once more. What if ten are found there?” He replied,“ I will not destroy it for the sake of the ten.”The LORD went on his way when he had finished speaking to Abraham. Then Abraham returned home.

He threatened to destroy them, but Moses, his chosen one, interceded with him and turned back his destructive anger.

When he struck them down, they sought his favor; they turned back and longed for God.They remembered that God was their protector, and that the sovereign God was their deliverer.
