If this is how you are going to treat me, please go ahead and kill me— if I have found favor in your eyes— and do not let me face my own ruin.”

自己在曠野走了一日的路程，來到一棵羅騰樹下，就坐在那裏求死，說：「耶和華啊，罷了！求你取我的性命，因為我不勝於我的列祖。」

耶和華啊，現在求你取我的命吧！因為我死了比活着還好。」

受患難的人為何有光賜給他呢？心中愁苦的人為何有生命賜給他呢？他們切望死，卻不得死；求死，勝於求隱藏的珍寶。他們尋見墳墓就快樂，極其歡喜。

照着我所切慕、所盼望的，沒有一事叫我羞愧。只要凡事放膽，無論是生是死，總叫基督在我身上照常顯大。因我活着就是基督，我死了就有益處。但我在肉身活着，若成就我工夫的果子，我就不知道該挑選甚麼。我正在兩難之間，情願離世與基督同在，因為這是好得無比的。然而，我在肉身活着，為你們更是要緊的。

但忍耐也當成功，使你們成全、完備，毫無缺欠。

惟願我得着所求的，願神賜我所切望的；就是願神把我壓碎，伸手將我剪除。我因沒有違棄那聖者的言語，就仍以此為安慰，在不止息的痛苦中還可踴躍。

我的痛苦為何長久不止呢？我的傷痕為何無法醫治、不能痊癒呢？難道你待我有詭詐，像流乾的河道嗎？

倘或你肯赦免他們的罪......不然，求你從你所寫的冊上塗抹我的名。」

甚至我寧肯噎死，寧肯死亡，勝似留我這一身的骨頭。

我為何出胎見勞碌愁苦，使我的年日因羞愧消滅呢？

日頭出來的時候，神安排炎熱的東風，日頭曝曬約拿的頭，使他發昏，他就為自己求死，說：「我死了比活着還好！」神對約拿說：「你因這棵蓖麻發怒合乎理嗎？」他說：「我發怒以至於死，都合乎理！」

耶和華已經除去你的刑罰，趕出你的仇敵。以色列的王－耶和華在你中間；你必不再懼怕災禍。
