自己在旷野走了一日的路程，来到一棵罗腾树下，就坐在那里求死，说：“耶和华啊，罢了！求你取我的性命，因为我不胜于我的列祖。”

耶和华啊，现在求你取我的命吧！因为我死了比活着还好。”

“受患难的人为何有光赐给他呢？心中愁苦的人为何有生命赐给他呢？他们切望死，却不得死；求死，胜于求隐藏的珍宝。他们寻见坟墓就快乐，极其欢喜。

照着我所切慕、所盼望的，没有一事叫我羞愧。只要凡事放胆，无论是生是死，总叫基督在我身上照常显大。因我活着就是基督，我死了就有益处。但我在肉身活着，若成就我工夫的果子，我就不知道该挑选什么。我正在两难之间，情愿离世与基督同在，因为这是好得无比的。然而，我在肉身活着，为你们更是要紧的。

但忍耐也当成功，使你们成全、完备，毫无缺欠。

“惟愿我得着所求的，愿神赐我所切望的；就是愿神把我压碎，伸手将我剪除。我因没有违弃那圣者的言语，就仍以此为安慰，在不止息的痛苦中还可踊跃。

我的痛苦为何长久不止呢？我的伤痕为何无法医治、不能痊愈呢？难道你待我有诡诈，像流干的河道吗？

倘或你肯赦免他们的罪......不然，求你从你所写的册上涂抹我的名。”

甚至我宁肯噎死，宁肯死亡，胜似留我这一身的骨头。

我为何出胎见劳碌愁苦，使我的年日因羞愧消灭呢？

日头出来的时候，神安排炎热的东风，日头曝晒约拿的头，使他发昏，他就为自己求死，说：“我死了比活着还好！”神对约拿说：“你因这棵蓖麻发怒合乎理吗？”他说：“我发怒以至于死，都合乎理！”

耶和华已经除去你的刑罚，赶出你的仇敌。以色列的王耶和华在你中间；你必不再惧怕灾祸。
