自己在旷野走了一天的路程，来到一棵罗腾树下，坐下来祷告求死，说：“耶和华啊，我受够了，求你取走我的性命吧，我不比我的祖先强。”

耶和华啊，求你收回我的性命吧，我死了比活着还好！”

“为何赐光给受苦的人，赐生命给心灵痛苦的人？他们等候死亡却等不到，他们求死胜于求宝藏。他们归入坟墓时非常快乐，欣喜若狂。

我殷切地期待和盼望：我不会感到任何羞愧，而是放胆无惧，不管是生是死，都要一如既往地使基督在我身上得到尊崇。因为对我来说，活着是为了基督，死了也有益处。如果活在世上，我可以做工，多结果子。我真不知道该怎么选择！我处在两难之间。我情愿离开世界，与基督在一起，那实在是再好不过了。可是为了你们，我应该活在世上。

你们要坚忍到底，使你们纯全、完备、毫无缺欠。

唯愿我的祈求蒙应允，愿上帝成全我的冀望，愿祂压碎我，伸手毁灭我。这样，我还能感到欣慰，在残酷的痛苦中雀跃，因我没有违背圣者之言。

为什么我的痛楚无休无止？为什么我的创伤无法医治？难道你要像一条时断时流的小溪让我无法依靠吗？

恳求你赦免他们的罪，不然请你从你的册子上抹掉我的名字吧。”

以致我宁愿窒息而死，也不愿这样活着。

为什么我要从母胎出来，经历患难和痛苦，在羞辱中度过一生呢？

太阳出来的时候，上帝刮起燥热的东风，烈日把约拿晒得发昏，他就再次求死说：“我死了比活着还好！”上帝对约拿说：“你为这棵蓖麻大发脾气合理吗？”约拿回答说：“我就是气死了也合理。”

耶和华已经撤销对你的刑罚，赶走你的仇敌，以色列的王耶和华与你同在，你必不再惧怕灾祸。
