And when the people had come into the camp, the elders of Israel said,“ Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the Lord from Shiloh to us, that when it comes among us it may save us from the hand of our enemies.”

The sight of the glory of the Lord was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain in the eyes of the children of Israel.So Moses went into the midst of the cloud and went up into the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

“ Take this Book of the Law, and put it beside the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there as a witness against you;

So I swore in My wrath,‘ They shall not enter My rest.’”

Thus says the Lord:“ Heaven is My throne, And earth is My footstool. Where is the house that you will build Me? And where is the place of My rest?

When I went up into the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant which the Lord made with you, then I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I neither ate bread nor drank water.

So the children of Israel inquired of the Lord( the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days,

Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth, Among them the blind and the lame, The woman with child And the one who labors with child, together; A great throng shall return there.They shall come with weeping, And with supplications I will lead them. I will cause them to walk by the rivers of waters, In a straight way in which they shall not stumble; For I am a Father to Israel, And Ephraim is My firstborn.

Thus says the Lord:“ Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said,‘ We will not walk in it.’

“ Then it shall come to pass, when you are multiplied and increased in the land in those days,” says the Lord,“ that they will say no more,‘ The ark of the covenant of the Lord.’ It shall not come to mind, nor shall they remember it, nor shall they visit it, nor shall it be made anymore.

And He said,“ My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”Then he said to Him,“ If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

And the children of Israel set out from the Wilderness of Sinai on their journeys; then the cloud settled down in the Wilderness of Paran.

So it was, after three days, that the officers went through the camp;and they commanded the people, saying,“ When you see the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, and the priests, the Levites, bearing it, then you shall set out from your place and go after it.Yet there shall be a space between you and it, about two thousand cubits by measure. Do not come near it, that you may know the way by which you must go, for you have not passed this way before.”And Joshua said to the people,“ Sanctify yourselves, for tomorrow the Lord will do wonders among you.”Then Joshua spoke to the priests, saying,“ Take up the ark of the covenant and cross over before the people.” So they took up the ark of the covenant and went before the people.

Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the Lord; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.”

On that day I raised My hand in an oath to them, to bring them out of the land of Egypt into a land that I had searched out for them,‘ flowing with milk and honey,’ the glory of all lands.
