Moreover, from the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, until his thirty-second year— twelve years— neither I nor my brothers ate the food allotted to the governor.

And that’s not all. I was appointed as governor of Judah in the 20th year that Artaxerxes was king of Persia. I remained in that position until his 32nd year. During those 12 years, I and my relatives didn’t eat the food that was provided for my table.

Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes the king, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the food allowance of the governor.

For the entire twelve years that I was governor of Judah— from the twentieth year to the thirty second year of the reign of King Artaxerxes— neither I nor my officials drew on our official food allowance.

Furthermore, from the day King Artaxerxes appointed me to be their governor in the land of Judah— from the twentieth year until his thirty-second year, twelve years— I and my associates never ate from the food allotted to the governor.

当这一切事发生的时候，我不在耶路撒冷，因为巴比伦王亚达薛西三十二年，我回到王那里。过了多日，我又向王告假。

也从未白吃人的饭，倒是辛苦劳碌，昼夜做工，免得使你们中间有人受累。这并不是因我们没有权柄，而是要给你们作榜样，好让你们效法我们。

亚达薛西王二十年尼散月，酒摆在王面前，我拿起酒来奉给王。我在王面前从来没有愁容。

难道我们没有权利靠着传福音吃喝吗？难道我们没有权利带着信主的妻子一起出入，如同其余的使徒，和主的兄弟们，和矶法一样吗？只有我和巴拿巴没有权利不做工吗？有谁当兵而自备粮饷呢？有谁栽葡萄园而不吃园里的果子呢？有谁牧养牛羊而不喝牛羊的奶呢？我说这些话岂是照一般人的看法？律法不也是这样说吗？就如摩西的律法记着：“牛在踹谷的时候，不可笼住它的嘴。”难道神所挂念的是牛吗？他不全是为我们说的吗？的确是为我们说的！因为耕种的要存着指望去耕种；收割的也要存着分享谷物的指望去收割。我们既然把属灵的种子撒在你们中间，若从你们收取养生之物，这还算大事吗？假如别人在你们身上享有这权利，何况我们呢？然而，我们并没有用过这权利，倒是凡事忍受，免得基督的福音受到阻碍。你们岂不知在圣殿供职的人吃圣殿中的食物吗？在祭坛伺候的人分享坛上的供物吗？主也是这样命令，要传福音的人靠着福音养生。但这权利我全然没有用过。我写这些话，并非要你们这样待我，因为我宁可死也不让人使我所夸的落了空。

这样，我的赏赐是什么呢？就是我传福音的时候，使人不花钱得福音，免得我用尽了传福音的权利。

你们纳粮也为这个缘故，因他们是神的仆役，专管这事。凡人所当得的，就给他。当得粮的，给他纳粮；当得税的，给他上税；当惧怕的，惧怕他；当恭敬的，恭敬他。

如今请王知道，这城若再建造，城墙完工，他们就不再进贡、纳粮、缴税，王的国库必受亏损。如今，我们吃的盐既然全是宫廷的盐，就不忍见王吃亏，因此奏告于王，
