「王會回答說，『我實在告訴你們，你們幫助我最卑微的一個弟兄，就是幫助我了。』

任憑他們咒詛吧，你必賜福給我。攻擊我的人必蒙羞，你的僕人必歡喜。

那時，摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒起兵攻打你們，並派人去召比珥的兒子巴蘭來咒詛你們。我不但沒有聽巴蘭的話，反而使他為你們連連祝福。這樣，我從巴勒手中救了你們。

巴蘭用詩歌預言說：「巴勒啊，要留心聽！西撥的兒子啊，請聽我言。

又見他們人多勢眾，都驚恐萬狀，對米甸的長老說：「這群人將吞掉我們周圍的一切，如同牛吃光田間的草一樣。」那時，西撥的兒子巴勒做摩押王。他差遣使者到幼發拉底河附近的毗奪——比珥的兒子巴蘭的家鄉，去召巴蘭。他讓使者帶去的信息是：「有一個民族從埃及鋪天蓋地而來，就住在我對面。他們比我強大，求你為我咒詛他們。這樣，我也許就能擊敗他們，把他們趕走。我知道你祝福誰，誰就蒙福；你咒詛誰，誰就遭禍。」摩押和米甸的長老們帶著占卜的禮金去見巴蘭，把巴勒的話轉告他。巴蘭說：「你們今夜住在這裡，我必照耶和華的旨意回覆你們。」摩押的使臣就在巴蘭那裡住下。晚上，上帝來問巴蘭：「住在你這裡的是誰？」巴蘭回答說：「他們是摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒派來的使臣，前來告訴我說，『有一個民族從埃及鋪天蓋地而來。請你去咒詛那民族，這樣巴勒王或許能擊敗他們，把他們趕走。』」

雅各啊，你的帳篷何等華美！以色列啊，你的居所何等佳美！像連綿的山谷，河畔的園子；又如耶和華栽種的沉香，水邊的香柏樹。他們沐浴充沛的甘霖，撒種於濕潤的沃土。他們的君王高過亞甲，國度名震四方。上帝把他們帶出埃及，祂的力量如野牛之角。他們要吞滅敵國，打碎敵人的骨頭，用利箭射穿仇敵。他們蹲伏如雄獅，躺臥如母獅，誰敢招惹？祝福他們的人有福了！咒詛他們的人有禍了！」巴勒聽了大怒，用力擊掌，對巴蘭說：「我請你來咒詛我的仇敵，你竟三次祝福他們。

上帝沒有咒詛的，我怎能咒詛？耶和華沒有斥責的，我怎能斥責？我從峰頂觀看他們，從高崗眺望他們，這獨居一方之民，不與萬國同列。雅各的子孫多如塵土，誰能數得清？誰能數清以色列人的四分之一？我願像義人一樣死去，如義人般終此一生。」巴勒對巴蘭說：「你這是做什麽？我請你來咒詛我的仇敵，你竟祝福他們！」
