When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

王问我：“你想要什么呢？”我就向天上的神祷告，

因我为你的殿，心中迫切如同火烧；辱骂你的人的辱骂，都落在我身上。我哭泣禁食，这竟成了我的羞辱。

要与喜乐的人一同喜乐，与哀哭的人一同哀哭。

你要起来，怜悯锡安，因为现在是恩待锡安的时候；所定的日期已经到了。因为你的众仆人喜爱它的石头，爱惜它的尘土。

报信的人回答，说：“以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，伤亡惨重，你两个儿子何弗尼和非尼哈也都死了，民中被杀的甚多，神的约柜也被抢去了。”因为以利年老体重，报信的人一提到神的约柜，以利就从椅子上往后跌倒在门旁，颈骨折断而死。以利治理了以色列四十年。以利的媳妇，非尼哈的妻子怀了孕，产期近了；她一听见神的约柜被抢去，以及她公公和丈夫都死了的消息，就忽然感到疼痛，曲身生产了。她快要死的时候，站在旁边的妇女们对她说：“不要怕，你生了一个儿子！”她却不回答，也不理会。她给孩子起名叫以迦博，说：“荣耀已经离开以色列了。”这是因为神的约柜被抢去，又因为她的公公和丈夫都死了。她说：“荣耀已经离开了以色列，因为神的约柜被抢去了。”

“那些属你，为了切慕大会而忧愁的人，他们担当了羞辱；我必招聚他们。

他回答说：“我是希伯来人，我敬畏耶和华天上的神，就是那创造海洋和陆地的。”

要他们为这隐秘的事祈求天上的神怜悯，免得但以理和他的同伴与巴比伦其余的智慧人一同灭亡。

他们这样答覆我们，说：‘我们是天地之神的仆人，正在重建这多年以前已经建好的殿，就是一位以色列伟大的君王所建成的。但因为我们的祖先激怒了天上的神，神就把他们交在迦勒底人巴比伦王尼布甲尼撒的手中；尼布甲尼撒就拆毁这殿，把人民掳到巴比伦去。

我一听见这事，就撕裂我的衣服和外袍，拔掉头上的头发和胡须，惊惧地坐着。
