How terrible it will be for Nineveh! It is a city of murderers! It is full of liars! It is filled with stolen goods! The killing never stops!

Woe to the bloody city, all full of lies and plunder— no end to the prey!

What sorrow awaits Nineveh, the city of murder and lies! She is crammed with wealth and is never without victims.

“‘ For this is what the Sovereign Lord says:“‘ Woe to the city of bloodshed, to the pot now encrusted, whose deposit will not go away! Take the meat out piece by piece in whatever order it comes.“‘ For the blood she shed is in her midst: She poured it on the bare rock; she did not pour it on the ground, where the dust would cover it.To stir up wrath and take revenge I put her blood on the bare rock, so that it would not be covered.“‘ Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says:“‘ Woe to the city of bloodshed! I, too, will pile the wood high.

There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.

“ Son of man, will you judge her? Will you judge this city of bloodshed? Then confront her with all her detestable practicesand say:‘ This is what the Sovereign Lord says: You city that brings on herself doom by shedding blood in her midst and defiles herself by making idols,

“ Woe to him who builds a city with bloodshed and establishes a town by injustice!

The lion killed enough for his cubs and strangled the prey for his mate, filling his lairs with the kill and his dens with the prey.

In the evening, sudden terror! Before the morning, they are gone! This is the portion of those who loot us, the lot of those who plunder us.

Who handed Jacob over to become loot, and Israel to the plunderers? Was it not the Lord, against whom we have sinned? For they would not follow his ways; they did not obey his law.

No longer do they drink wine with a song; the beer is bitter to its drinkers.
